Wow. Last time the Indie Spirits weren't an Oscar bake-off...? I'm confused as to why the nominees aren't 'Milk', 'Rachel Getting Married', 'Slumdog Millionaire', 'The Visitor', and 'The Wrestler'.

Well, no. Morton actually was nominated for an Oscar.

Wow, this is the first week I've been hearing about Melissa Leo and we're already arguing about her chances...that's some kind of feat!

I haven't been acting like there's no buzz/support behind her. Matter of fact, back in SEPTEMBER, I had her in my predictions as a contender...and that was based entirely on the performance I saw in the trailer. I just reject your insistence that she's some be-all-end-all-no-way-in-hell-she's-NOT-nominated contender. An indie spirit award nomination is hardly the break-in nomination. The film's most nominated status helps, sure, but...just ask Angelina Jolie - A Mighty Heart, Catharine O'Hara - For Your Consideration, Samantha Morton - In America, Jennifer Aniston - Good Girl, Maggie Gyllenhaal - Secretary. All were critically acclaimed performances that had some manner of push for their nominations and all failed to achieve it. Gyllenhaal is probably the closest comparison. Now, that's not to say it can't or doesn't happen. The Spirit Awards have plenty of past nominees to claim. I'm just saying that most of those nominees-to-Oscar comparisons required some year-end crix prizes. If she gets more than a couple, I'd say she's in. If she doesn't and can't manage a SAG nomination, she may not be so lucky. Let's see how the Globes do later this month and how the critics prizes go.
