I don't know why, but for some reason I'm getting a very strong premonition that Viggo Mortensen is going to win Best Actor this year for The Road. I really don't have any idea why I feel this way. Just call it a hunch, I guess.

I didn't even think about adding an oldie in there. It is inevitable though. My guess would probably be between Frank Langella and Clint Eastwood.

This lineup is way too “hot” for a Best Actor list. There needs to be at least one old man veteran slot (i.e. Frank Langella or Richard Jenkins). I agree with you on Brolin's prospects, though. The chances of a nomination here might be stronger than for his supporting work in Milk.

Alternately, your Best Supporting Actress lineup looks very veteran-heavy (they're all either past winners or nominees). Maybe I'm relying too much on how the characters are written on the page, but Viola Davis' character packs a wallop of an emotional punch in her brief time in Doubt. Also, having read the script, Taraji P. Henson is the supporting female standout of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, not Tilda Swinton.

My updated list:

BEST PICTURE
Australia
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Milk
Rachel Getting Married

I think TDK's nomination will be it's reward.

BEST ANIMATED FILM
9
Kung Fu Panda
The Tale of Depereaux
Wall-E
Waltz with Bashir

Though Wall-E is the favorite, I think if any other flick were to win over Pixar it'd be Waltz.

BEST DIRECTOR
Australia - Baz Luhrmann
Changeling - Clint Eastwood
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - David Fincher
Milk - Gus Van Sant
Rachel Getting Married - Jonathan Demme

Clint Eastwood could be nominated over Nolan.

BEST ACTOR
Australia - Hugh Jackman
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Brad Pitt
Milk - Sean Penn
Revolutionary Road - Leonardo DiCaprio
W - Josh Brolin

I believe Josh Brolin can still be nominated despite low reviews for the film itself, much like Cate Blanchett last year.

BEST ACTRESS
Changeling - Angelina Jolie
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Cate Blanchett
Doubt - Meryl Streep
Happy-Go-Lucky - Sally Hawkins
Rachel Getting Married - Anne Hathaway

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

The Dark Knight - Heath Ledger
Milk - James Franco
Tropic Thunder - Robert Downey Jr.
W - Richard Dreyfuss

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Well, it largely stems from the fact that few of the other best picture contenders really seem to fit into the category and I'm hard pressed to fill the slot with any other big budget films since a lot of them also tanked, so I went with The Wrestler largely because it's a drama film with a boxing/wrestling style. It's more likely to get nodded for Sound Editing than Sound Mixing, but there it is.

would THE WRESTLER be the smallest budget film ever nominated in the sound category? bold choice oscarguy. as is your predictions for DEFIANCE and CHE, two films which take place mostly in a forest and jungle respectively, being nominated for art/set direction.

THE JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH being nominated for its amateurish f/x is certainly...different. i definitely have not seen anyone else make that prediction. i am especially surprised to see you think it will be nominated over best picture nominee THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON.

best picture is certainly the most eyebrow raising. only one big budget hollywood film nominated (THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON), along with one small budget hollywood film (MILK) and two micro budget non-hollywood films (THE WRESTLER and RACHEL GETTING MARRIED). the big winner being a big budget foreign film (AUSTRALIA) is certainly different than the usual predicitions year after year.

Since it appears The Road is being pushed to 2009 and not The Reader (Harvey's an ass), I have had to alter my hopefuls, but it won't be reflected any time soon...

So, here are the changes I made:

Replace Viggo Mortensen in Best Actor with Brad Pitt for Benjamin Button
Replace The Road in Adapted Screenplay with Doubt
Replace The Road in Film Editing with The Reader
Replace The Road in Sound Mixing with The Wrestler

After a request was made for a new thread and seeing my first one at 7 pages and the other at 5, so here's a new Predictions thread for Mid-October.

And I shall christen it with the Hopefuls update I posted last night.

http://www.oscarguy.com/Oscars/Annual/81st/Hopefuls.html

Many of you will be excited that I finally trimmed some of the fat from the predictions, eliminating several films that no longer have a realistic shot at nominations or were leftovers from a time when I was just throwing the kitchen sink in.
