Of course, Mamma Mia! The amount of hate the movie engendered (even among people who didn't bother to see it) is, to me, indicative of a certain level of misogyny.

Cloverfield was named the 3rd best film of 2008 by Cahiers du Cinema. I guess it's safe to categorize that as a snob favorite.

it was tough determining what should be considered a guilty pleasure and what was just too awful to be put on the list. movies like THE HAPPENING or STEP-BROTHERS are movies you should be ashamed of liking -- it goes beyond just being guilty.
none of these movies are bottom-of-the-barrel bad when you consider how low the barrely goes, but they are also never set out to be all that great (except for maybe AUSTRALIA).

I voted for Australia (the lowest rated among the ones I've seen) but I also enjoyed Tropic Thunder and plan on seeing Pineapple Express and Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

I went with Nick and Norah...though I find it to be a mostly unobjectionable, nice little movie. I also enjoyed the hugely panned and despised summer comedies a little bit...but they are in a different ballgame from this film.

among my friends and family i am known as a film snob. i generally do not see any film that has not been critically praised or won a few awards. however, occasionally i go to what most people refer to as popcorn movies. most of them i find stupid or flawed, and therefore am unable to enjoy them because i can only think about how the movies could be better or how the money to make them should have gone toward making better films.
every once-in-awhile i run across a popcorn flick which i love despite all its flaws. i more than just like these movies or have some fun watching them -- no, these films i fall absolutely in love with, and i leave the theatre grinning from ear-to-ear. i would never put them on my top ten list or even admit to most people that i enjoyed a critically panned film, but despite my high standards for what constitutes a good movie i cannot escape the fact that i absolutely loved these movies. they are my guilty pleasures.
this year my biggest guilty please was TWILIGHT. i had not heard of the books before the huge hype of the film, and despite the huge box-office i had not intention of seeing it. over the holidays, though, my step-mother asked me to go see them with her since she was a fan of the books. only in the spirit of the holidays did i agree to go. imagine my surprise when i found myself not only enjoying the movie, but outright falling in love with the story and its characters. the movie was far more entertaining and romantic than it had any right to be.
