I find it fun to look back at predix. Everyone predicted good, but lower numbers for Iron Man (which has already passed all of your predictions and looks destined for the $300+M club) whereas Prince Caspian has significantly underperformed.

i completely agree. THE DARK KNIGHT had everything going for it to be the number one film even before a single shot was completed, but after ledger's death this film is ready to pass into legend. i was pleasantly surprised by BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT looks even more bold and beautiful.

IRON MAN looks fun, but very bland. no style or emotional range. it certainly has an advantage by being the first summer movie and will probably open with $70 million, but the next week SPEED RACER opens and then PRINCE CASPIAN and then THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL.

the only big film opening the week after THE DARK KNIGHT is THE X-FILES 2 and then the next week is the MUMMY 3.

while SPIDER-MAN 3 definitely benefited from being the first summer movie, TRANSFORMERS equally benefited by being one of the last. i sure hope THE DARK KNIGHT is the champ.

I can understand it being a high grosser but I don't see it surpassing TDK. I might just be biased, but with all things considered, this year's Batman is Indy's strongest rival.

I can agree with you on Panda, Zahveed, but I have a LOT of friends and associates that are comic book fans and the buzz is pretty high. They are stoked by the previews and with reviews coming in on the "comic book movie with brains" side, it could be a much larger hit than you think. I know I'm kind of excited and I don't often get that way about comic book adaptations.

That's pretty messed up having TDK in-between Iron Man (a comic book movie based on a second-tier superhero with only a moderate anticipation level) and Kung-Fu Panda (a sub-par looking cgi flick in no contention with Wall-E).

Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights - From Hollywood to the Heartland averaged a measly $527 per screen this weekend.

But that's a fortune compared to The Hottie And The Nottie. The Paris Hilton vehicle took in $225 per screen. :D

At this point, it's safe to say that The Dark Knight will make a good run for Spider-Man 3's opening weekend record at the least. Heath Ledger was the undisputed star of the first trailers, and everyone I talked to was salivating about his role, anxious to see what he would make of the character (and some hardly believing it was him at all). Now with his death, the anticipation for the movie is beyond radar: it has become THE must-see movie within my circle, and I expect its opening weekend will be monstrous, with the chance of great word-of-mouth pushing the movie towards the $350M-$400M mark.

And it seems no matter the quality of the movie itself, people will not speak a bad word about it.
