It was announced today that Rome star Kevin McKidd is in talks to star as Thor.

i did not even think of craig, but he is already out.

News Item--
James Bond star Daniel Craig has turned down the chance to portray Marvel superhero Thor on the big screen.

The actor was one of the movie producers' favourites to play the blond-haired, hammer-wielding Norse warrior, in director Kenneth Branagh's film adaptation of the comic.

But Craig snubbed the offer, claiming it would be "too much of a power-trip" to play both 007 and Thor.

Thor is due for release in 2010.

well, i guess this confirms it. branagh giving up the stage and shakespeare to film THOR is just...wrong. this just seems like it is headed for another HULK misfire. good directors are not necessarily right for comic book films.

Branagh Clears Schedule To Take On Thor

Shakespearean actor Kenneth Branagh has stepped down as director of upcoming West End play Hamlet to take on the big-screen adaptation of Marvel comic Thor.

The English star, who helmed and starred in the 1996 version of Shakespeare's Hamlet, was due to direct Jude Law in a Donmar Warehouse production of the tragedy at London's Wyndham's Theatre.

But he's had to withdraw from the project after reaching the final stages of negotiations with Marvel bosses over the Thor movie, due for release in 2010.

Branagh will be replaced by Michael Grandage, the artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse, which is currently in the middle of its year-long residency at the Wyndham's Theatre.

Grandage says, "We have arrived at this arrangement very amicably."

And Law is also in support of the production change.

He adds, "I feel privileged to be part of the Donmar West End season and to be directed by the company's artistic director Michael Grandage.

"It was Ken who brought me to this project. With his support and guidance, as one of the greatest Hamlets of all time, and with Michael directing, I can't imagine a better scenario for me, as an actor, to undertake the role."

Hamlet is due to begin previews at the end of May.

i heard "they" wanted mcconaughey for captain america, and stan lee even endorsed will smith for the part...but only if obama wins.

i think the brad pitt speculation occurred because he has already been fitted for the costume when he did TROY.
I was going off of news I heard a few months ago because

Matthew McConaughey would be an awful decision, as would Will Smith.

Well, with Kenneth Branagh directing, it'll be at the same qualitative level as a porn.

Well, maybe enough people found Stardust a shitty movie like I did and decided he shouldn't direct it.

Interesting, although I thought that Matthew Vaughn, director of last year's Stardust, had already signed on to direct Thor. I wonder what happened to him.

This could be interesting. With any other contemporary director it would just seem lame, but it's more fitting with one skilled in helming elaborate Shakespearian fare / period pieces considering the nature of the character.

Plus I heard they're wanting Brad Pitt for Captain America, so I don't know about Thor. I think they will need a bulkier guy to take that roll.

branagh directing a comic book movie is either going to be a brilliant decision (THE DARK KNIGHT) or a disasterous decision (HULK). there will be no in-between.

matthew mcconaughey or brad pitt seem like the best choices for the part, though they may try to go with someone younger like taylor kitsch.

Branagh In Talks To Direct Comic Book Movie
29 September 2008 12:08 PM, PDT

Shakespearean star Kenneth Branagh is the surprise favourite to direct the next big Marvel comic book movie Thor.

The British actor - more famous for his roles onstage - is negotiating with Marvel bosses over the movie, due for release in 2010.

Branagh's last big-screen directorial outing was 2007's Sleuth, starring Sir Michael Caine and Jude Law.

But he is most recognised in film for directing 1989 Shakespeare epic Henry V; Robert De Niro in 1994's Frankenstein, and a 1996 version of Shakespeare's Hamlet, with himself in the lead role.

Thor follows the tale of a disabled medical student with the Norse god as an alter ego.
