Today is the Nobel Prize Awards ceremony. This is the banquet menu:

Guinea hen mosaic, carrot variation with Gotland truffle,
and chanterelle duxelle with truffle mayonnaise

Turbot cupola stuffed with Norwegian lobster,
tartelette with lobster on a bed of cream cheese and spinach,
pointed cabbage terrine, lobster sauce and almond potato purée

Chocolate silhouette with nougat and sea buckthorn explosion

The Nobel Prizes are handed out today, although the ceremony receive less attention and attendance than usual, because of Peace Prize Laureate Nelson Mandela's death and memorial service.

But the issue I'm posting about, is that that this year's Medicine Prize Winner Randy Schekman criticizes "luxury" journals like Science and Nature "distort science" and "contribute to the escalating number of papers that are retracted as flawed or fraudulent".

Literature Laureate Alice Munro will not attend the 2013 Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden, on 10 December due to health reasons. No decision has yet been made about who will receive the Nobel Prize in Literature on her behalf.

Very richly deserved. If you all will recall, Munro's short story, "The Bear Came Over the Mountain" served as the inspiration for 2007's Away From Her.

There's a few posts on the Nobels in the once-popular, non-dead Current Events topic.

Once again, the Peace Prize is awarded to a current news topic. I can't say it's a bad choice, but maybe they should have waited a few years and see what the Weapons Inspectors actually get done in Syria.

2013 Nobel Prizes

Post by Greg »

The Nobel Prizes are being awarded this week.

Monday the Physiology/Medicine prize went to James E. Rothman, Randy W. Schekman and Thomas C. Südhof "for their discoveries of machinery regulating vesicle traffic, a major transport system in our cells".

Yesterday the Physics prize went to François Englert and Peter W. Higgs "for the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider"

Today the Chemistry prize went to Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel "for the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems".

Literature is tomorrow, Peace is Friday, and Economics is this coming Monday.
