I'm noticing this a year late, but it's curious to note that the Physics Prize winner John Michael Kosterlitz is actually the nephew of Oscar-nominated film director Henry Koster.

Even though Bob Dylan was unable to attend the ceremony, he did write this moving acceptance speech which was read there:

Here is the menu for the Nobel Banquet:

Charcoal baked langoustine and scallop,
served with nettles, ramson and pickled winter apples

Quail from Södermanland in black garlic and leek ash
with Jerusalem artichoke, preserved wild mushrooms
and jus of roasted chicken skin and mustard seed

Cloud of sudachi fruit, cloudberry sorbet, miso crumbs
and deep-fried rice paper

Utterly unexpected, and delightful -- acknowledging one of the greatest living poets.

It's not really an edgy choice/ It would have been 40 years ago -- now it's almost a soothing choice that achieves edge only by its genre defiance.

Anyway: bravo. And nice to have something uplifting in the midst of the muck otherwise dominating the news.

Showing their bias, even when the Nobel Literature Committee finally awards another American, they still pick one who requires a translator.

Well knock me over with a feather! I think they're just messing with the American literary community. Me, I'm thrilled with the choice. Dylan with a Nobel! Fantastic.

Dylan is the first songwriter to win the Literature Prize. I guess that's the reason they needed a week longer than usual to deliberate before announcing the winner.

Oddly, Dylan is the only American-born person to win a Nobel Prize this year, although several of the winners have moved to the U.S. at some point, and acquired American citizenship.

Bob Dylan becomes the second person to win both the Oscar and the Nobel Prize, although the first in that order. George Bernard Shaw won the Nobel Prize and then the Oscar later.

They are now handing out the 2016 Nobel Prizes. Today, "the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy."
