It would be nice to think that a film or two from this year is good enough to make my top ten as it stands currently.

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (Cristi Puiu)
Dog Days (Ulrich Seidl)
In the Bedroom (Todd Field)
La Commune (Paris 1871) (Peter Wakins)
The Lady and the Duke (Eric Rohmer)
The Magdalene Sisters (Peter Mullan)
My Winnipeg (Guy Maddin)
Mysterious Skin (Gregg Araki)
Still Walking (Kirokazu Kore-eda)
Vera Drake (Mike Leigh)

Completely off the top of my head (funnily enough, I was trying to compile a list of 100 just a few days ago in preparation). Nowhere near as arty I'm sure, but these movies are ones I love. In no order.

The Royal Tenenbaums
Children of Men
Wonder Boys
The Lord of the Rings
In the Mood for Love
The Fog of War
WALL*E
There Will Be Blood
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Heh. The Road, maybe (at least, I'm ready to love it). That said, in a top 100, I'd probably include The Brothers Bloom and Summer Hours. Not in a top ten, though.

I guess if I were going to draw up a top 10 following my own prescription, it might looks something like:

Goodbye, Dragon Inn
Blissfully Yours
a History of Violence
the New World
the Company
35 Shots of Rum (though I feel I ought to rewatch and sit with this one more- this is why I'm a bit annoyed by the rush to birth the best-of-the-decade derby)
Secret Sunshine
the Son (though I too like La Promesse better)
Spirited Away (holds up beautifully on repeat viewings, as do Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo)
the Gleaners & I

although I must admit that several titles on Eric and your lists would crowd out some of these too. I wasn't intending to build a ten; I thought you were fishing for more possibilities for a 100. But I could stand by the above list too.

I'm suspicious of best of the 00's lists that include zero films by Tsai Ming-Liang, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, David Cronenberg, or Terence Malick (yes I know the latter only released one, but that doesn't make me any less suspicious of a list without it).

I also think a list with true class would have at least one film by Robert Altman, Claire Denis, Lee Chang-dong, the Dardenne Brothers, Hayao Miyazaki, and Agnès Varda.

You're allowed to be. I need to see several films again. My favorite Tsai is The Hole. I was a little put off by some of the films of his this decade. Tropical Malady right now hovers beneath my top ten. I didn't really care too much for Syndromes and a Century but I might've missed something. Cronenberg's work this decade didn't do much for me, neither did The New World which doesn't hold up on repeat viewings. I currently have The Thin Red Line as the second best film of the 90's.

Gosford Park is a great film but it's not one of the ten best of the decade. I haven't seen The Company but I doubt many would rank Dr. T and the Women or Prairie Home Companion as great films. I prefer the Dardenne Brothers' La Promesse to L'Enfant or The Son. Spirited Away just doesn't hold up on repeat viewings and I haven't seen Howl's Moving Castle. Haven't seen any Varda and I actually just saw Friday Night and Beau Travail before leaving for Baton Rouge. I actually think I prefer Friday Night. Beau Travail is more a work of formal mastery but I think Friday Night is a dream you can lose yourself in. I had to imdb search Lee Chang-dong.

The one major concession I'll make is that Tropical Malady probably should be on my list.

So far I have about 45 movies (from 2000-2004) that I would consider putting on a list, and as I was going through the database, I noticed a great deal of films I wanted to see that I haven't got around to yet. I may need to binge soon.

Bringin' it back...

I'm participating in a poll with some friends where we have to wrap up the best films of the decade and I'm struggling to come up with 100 films. My ten in no particular order is roughly as follows. I realize my chief preoccupation is with memory and love, how you can never be exactly with the same person in time, how you're the sum of all of your moments. I think these films deal with that on some level.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (Spielberg)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Dominik)
Before Sunset (Linklater)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Gondry)
In the Mood for Love (Wong)
Memento (Nolan)
Mulholland Drive (Lynch)
The Royal Tenenbaums (Anderson)
WALL*E (PIXAR)
Y Tu Mama Tambien (Cuaron)
