Tripp, you did win last year's contest, and with thirteen points. The year before, the co-winners scored only 10 points, so it was quite the accomplishment. Eric was the runner-up. And I came in last. You can relive that wonderful experience here.

You don't REMEMBER?? Isn't your crown laying around someplace?

2004 is gone, but I saved the scores - and the entire text - of that contest. Sabin and rudeboy tied for first place that year... and Sabin STILL found something to bitch about. Eric, dws1982 and Okri tied for runner-up. And Damien and Tripp came in last. Tripp also came in last in that year's Roger Ebert contest, but the 13 point victory the following year more than redeemed him.

I think you're all on to something with your Flags/Letters tie. Don't go by me. Again, I lost my own contest last year. But I'm going that route, too.

Careful with your ties, people. Every one you get wrong is a deduction of a point.

I never do these things but i'll spend a little time thinking about this. I have a kinda guilty pleasure fixation with peter travers...i love rolling stone in general and a i actually agree with most of peter travers reviews. But heres a crazy go at this.

1. Tie Departed and Borat.
2. Babel
3. Dreamgirls
4. The Queen
5. Volver
6. United 93
7. TIE Flags of Our Fathers/Letters....
8. A Prarie Home Companion
9. TIE Good German/Bubble
10. Miami Vice

I don't know, he's gotta include some films he hasn't reviewed yet and i don't have any here. I remember reading an enthusiastic review for miami vice from him but i don't know if that was just because it was the middle of the summer and there was nothing else to be enthusiastic about....I also remember an enthusiatic response to bubble and i know he likes good german so thats where that came from.....but i'll probably get two points taken away for 3 ties that won't happen. And i almost did a forth tie between casino royale and miami vice at the end but held off....but i think that could happen too. And could easily see marie antonette, little children or thank you for smoking being here....i'm probably completely off.

Yeah, it's about time, isn't it. I already know I'm going to screw this up. How many four star films won't even make the list in favor of a vanilla three-and-a-half-er? I think 'Borat' will crack the top five, whereas 'United 93' will float closer to 7.

Good thing Roger Ebert's up and about, but there's a Christmas ritual we can forget about this year.

PETER TRAVERS:
1. 'Babel'
2. 'The Departed'
3. 'Borat: Cultural Learnings for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan'
4. 'Flags of Our Fathers'
5. 'Volver'
6. 'Dreamgirls'
7. 'United 93'
8. 'The Queen'
9. 'A Prairie Home Companion'
10. 'For Your Consideration'

What's the earliest date he has posted his list? Dec 1st? Will try to come up with my list before that but I'm guessing that these 3 will most likely make it: Dreamgirls, The Departed & The Queen.

Btw, Wedding Crashers is directed by David Dobkin who previously directed Shanghai Knights. His next is Fred Claus also starring Vince Vaughn with Rachel Weisz & Paul Giamatti.

Oscars, shmoscars!

Have you the mettle to take on Travers?

Can you believe I've been plugging away at this contest for six years now, since 2000? Along with its companion, the Roger Ebert Top Ten List Contest? They haven't always worked out - announcing the contest the day before Travers' Top Ten was my usual tendency - but it's been great fun having them with you guys. I'm not going to be online very much for the remainder of the year, but I'll keep checking in to keep track of the contest.

For you newcomers reading this, the PETER TRAVERS (and Roger Ebert) TOP TEN LIST contest is a time honored tradition here. This contest was devised because a). the Rolling Stone movie reviewer used to be the first high-profile critic to release his list, including films that haven't been released or reviewed by anyone else; and b). he's a waaaay predictable judge of character. Point a. has been undermimed for the past two years. Travers used to get his list out in the first week of December. Lately, he's made us wait until the mid-month. I've no idea what will happen this year. Regardless, I'm starting very early this year.

And I've no idea what's going to happen with the Ebert contest. Will Ebert even have a list this year? Has he seen enough movies? I'll set up contest just in case, and in a few days from now because - in opposition of Travers' list - Ebert's list has been released EARLIER than it used to be, sometimes through leakers on Oscar Watch.

But enough preliminaries. On to the game!

----------------------------------------------------

The Tony Orlando of film criticism (compare mustaches) is also the most principled critic in America today. Meaning, he never wavers from his aesthetic, which is: campus bourgeousie, or testosterone with a hair-cut. He's big on the violent, if trite, metaphors. ("It's a shot to the heart" (he's also big on hearts), "You won't know what hit you", "It's a knockout", "Doesn't pull its punches", etc.) And his tastes are exceedingly predictable. The suspense is never what the films are going to be - every year, it's agreed there's generally a pool of twelve or thirteen to choose from - but where they're going to place. Surprises are rare, and looking over his history of top tens reveals a pattern that's easy to suss out. Which is why it's a great contest. It's easier than you think!

**THE RULES**

Object: guess which films Travers will have on his list, and in what order.

a). One (1) point is awarded for correctly guessing which films will be on his top ten list.

b). One (1) additional point is awarded for accurately guessing precisely where a film will end up in the list. (Total: two points.)

c). One (1) more additional point is awarded for accurately gussing the number one film of the year. (Total: three points)

d). Three (3) bonus points for accurately predicting which movies will result in a tie, if any. (See his 1995, 2000, and 2005 lists below.) Remember, there may or may not be a tie this year. Accurately predicting that there will be no tie gets you zero (0) points. Nice try.

e). One sneaky method of increasing your score is to predict an inordinate amount of ties. If a contestant puts six tie predictions on the ballot, he has essentially predicted a total of sixteen films, thus raising the likelihood of having more films individually placing on the final list. To avoid such excesses, you will be penalized one (1) point for every inaccurately predicted tie.

f). Accurately predicting any coy stunt Peter pulls this year (note the placement for the non-theatrical Angels in America in 2003 or the dual lists in 2001) earns you three (3) points

g). The poll is officially closed when his list is released, and it's authenticity has been verified to my satisfaction.

h). Anyone caught revising his or her list after Travis releases his list will be disqualified.

i). In the event of a first place tie, the completely arbitrary solution is: whoever has guessed more higher-ranking movies on the list wins. If there is still a tie, then the winners will agree to share the honor with grace and humility. However, a fight to the death is not out of bounds.

j). Sonic Youth is not prohibited from winning his own contest. And for the record, I came in last place a year ago.

Some hints:

Rolling Stone has a helpful, if not very user-friendly, database you can browse through to see which movies he particularly liked this year. But a substantial amount of the list will be for films he hasn't written reviews for yet. If you don't see a review or a star grade, don't think he isn't considering it. The Top Ten list may be his first mention of a particular film.

And be flexible! Don't assume four star films get preferential treatment. Travers tends to place three-and-a-half star films over four star films on his list, and sometimes he omits them altogether. Two years ago, the four star Bad Education was nowhere to be found (although, Travers is not usually foreign-film friendly). Last year, the four star King Kong tied for last place beneath several three-and-a-half star films.
