I saw Saw on Showtime the other night, and I was actually surprised. It wasn't what I was expecting. I don't know who the director is, but he managed to keep the tension heightened right up until the very end.
I wouldn't call it a "gore-fest", though. Actually, there was very little on-screen violence. Most of the violence was implied.
A solid *** movie. Unfortunately, I've heard that the sequel wasn't very good.

I just saw Saw and I must say that it's a refreshing brand of horror film. The movie is a gore-fest version of a Hitchcockian thriller. I thought the entire plot merged flawlessly all of the parts until the somewhat surprising conclusion.
