Yes, what’s up with all these legendary pitchers making their exits of late? Ford was a bit before my time, but was always spoken of with reverence. R.I.P. Whitey Ford
The baseball Hall of Fame has been relocating heavenward of late. I neglected to R.I.P. Bob Gibson last week, for which I atone here. Now, today, the Chairman of the Board joins the list of newly departed.
The prime money pitcher of the great Yankee 50s/60s teams -- when they won so often, the adage was "rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for General Motors".
A great guy. I remember him in the broadcast, one day post-retirement, when he said "My philosophy of life is, I buy one, you buy one". All indications are he was just that easy-going and approachable.
If there's indeed a heaven, this year's all-rookie rotation -- Seaver/Gibson/Ford -- could take on all comers.
