Damien I seem to be answering my own question below by buying DVDs left, right and centre. However, the DVDs are much clearer than my video copies. And I'm thrilled to watch the ''extras'' on most of the DVDs - the documentaries, commentries, outtakes etc. Sadly I seem to be running out of titles to buy (though actually there are still so many around).

My latest buys:

Dr Strangelove
A Clockwork Orange
Barry Lyndon
The Remains of the Day
Pulp Fiction
The Pianist
Dangerous Liaisons
The Exorcist
Lawrence of Arabia
Women in Love
Gladiator
Dressed to Kill
The Last Emperor
Sense and Sensibility
Doctor Zhivago
Blue
White
Red
The Message: Mohammad Messenger of God
Gosford Park
Spartacus

Eh, the Scarlet Empress transfer didn't bother me quite as much (though I did hear that a much nicer-looking restoration exists and was not used for the DVD... at any rate the film kicks all sorts of arse).

On the Edge of the World disc (which looks mostly fabulous, by the way), Daniel Day-Lewis reads excerpts from Powell's autobiography/memoirs and it's Ian Christie and Thelma S. who do the actual "comments."

Add to my list of DVDs given to me (or ordered with cash & gift certs) this Christmas:
Only Angels Have Wings
Opera: Limited Edition
Fanny & Alexander (R2... the full 5 hour version... *contented sigh*)
I Know Where I'm Going!: Criterion (speaking of Powell Criterions!)

Christmas gifts (including a couple to myself) included:

Looney Tunes: Golden Collection
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
La Jetée / Sans Soleil (R2)
Hatari!
The Amicus Collection (R2)

(but my immediate family isn't opening gifts until this evening...)

A bunch of DVDs that are just sitting on my player, waiting to get watched include A Boy and His Dog, Takashi Miike's Dead or Alive trilogy, The Ben Stiller Show, The Out-of-Towners, The Intruder and, most excitingly, Bonjour Tristesse)...

I also just bought Hawks' Scarface separately from the gift set (Scarface, Wise Guys and The Untouchables are likely the only DePalma films that won't ever enter my DVD collection), only I got it from eBay. More importantly, though, is an auction I'm attempting to win for a multi-region player, which I'm ashamed I haven't tried to attain earlier (I could be watching Dogville by this point, for starters). I have an open-region albeit PAL-encoded disc of Chimes at Midnight I'd like to be able to watch on my TV and not just my computer screen. So the multi-region player is something I'm waiting for with baited breath. And the first DVD I'll get in a non-Region 1 format will be the Sunless/La Jetee disc, sho nuff.

I have my DVD collection on this webpage: My DVD Collection.
