I just saw it.
I have to say I like it better than An American in Paris and Singin' in the Rain and I love those two movies. I'm glad I bought it.

The Band Wagon was Fred Astaire's favorite film, according to his daughter who is interviewed on the suppelementary disc and who is also one of the commentators on the film itself. He made it either when his first wife was dying or just after she died. I don't recall which.
It is also, of course, a much altered version of his phenomenal stage success with his (then) more popular sister Adele done more than two decades earler. The screenplay is by Comden and Green, hot on the heels of their success with Singin' in the Rain.
Jack Buchanan's character is based on Jose Ferrer as confirmed by Betty Comden. The Triiplets number was not nearly as easy as it looks per Nanette Fabray who performed it. Lots of other interesting tidbits are contained in the two disc set. Also as valuable, the two-disc set of Easter Parade, released at the same time.
