Acting Bunch Winners of the 50s

In reverse order of preference:

1950 - three of the awards went to actors (Ferrer, Holliday, Hull) repeating stage performances over much stronger competition (Holedn, Davis, Holm).

1952 - Dull year, dull wins.

1955 - Not to my liking, the wins of Borgnine over Dean, Magnani over Hepburn and Van Fleet over the non-nominated Roz Russell (Picnic).

1958 - The only deserved winner here was Burl Ives and he won for the wrong film (The Big Country instead of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof). Spencer Tracy, too, was nominated for the wrong film (the dreary Old Man and the Sea over the exhilarating Last Hurrah). Susan Hayward was a good choice, but not as good as Roz Russell would have been.

1959 - OK wins, but aside from Signoret nothing of lasting value.

1953 - Good picks but Montgomery Clift would have been better than William Holden this time and Thelma Ritter on her fourth consecutive bid was more deserving than Donna Reed.

1956 - Very strong choices.

1957 - Great choice in Guinness, OK ones otherwise.

1954 - Brando and Saint were great, but Kelly over Garland and O'Brien over Malden were not.

1951 - I would have preferred Brando over Bogart and Ustinov or the non-nominated Robert Walker over Malden, but Leigh and Hunter to a lesser degree are great choices
