Why are you so surprised? I watch all kinds of movies. You really have an odd impression of me from the political threads, don't you?

I saw that last year. It was interesting, but not as compelling as Neil Jordan's Interview With the Vampire.

Rudeboy, i disagree with your view of Pitt in Legends of the Fall, which won my award as Best Picture of 1994. It was a star role, but he also was effective in it. Granted, his performance in Seven is much better, but when I first saw him as Tristan in Edward Zwick's captivating Western epic, I could see a long career being sustained by such performances. Too bad he's largely abandoned even trying to reach the kind of emotion and quality he showed in his earlier films. Now he spends his time making Ocean's 11 and 12 and 13. Maybe one day he'll start taking the meatier older guy parts he could probably do very effectively if he wanted to.

Try Guy Maddin's Dracula: Pages from a Virgin Diary.

Sorry to disagree, but surely Brad's role in Legends of the Fall is about as glossy, shallow and "movie star" a role as you can get... serious acting doesn't come into it, although he's wonderful compared to the unbearable mugging Anthony Hopkins put us through in that film.

Quote (Damien @ Jan. 14 2006,13:49) Not only is it a lousy performance, but how in the world can anyone consider it supporting? I also believe that its a dreadful performance but, although I haven't seen the movie in years, I do recall Cruise disappears half way through until the end, with the story focusing on the Brad Pitt character. So supporting seems fair enough. To balance things a little for criddic, I do have a couple of friends who believe Interview With the Vampire is the best thing Cruise has ever done.

I thank you all for your interest. 1994 was one of my favorite years, since I was writing reviews for my high school paper at the time. Yes, I defend my nomination of Tom Cruise for his work in Interview With the Vampire. He gave a thoroughly entertaining performance in a wonderfully stylish vampire movie. They don't make them like that anymore....they hardly ever did period. Cruise occassionally impresses me, although he is not among my favorite actors. Incidentally, Brad Pitt should go back to trying harder. In both his 1994 films, as well as both his 1995 films, he gave solid award-caliber performances. Why has he decided he wants to just be a movie-star instead of doing serious acting?

I think it started with Meet Joe Black, an enjoyable film with a fairly empty performance from Pitt.

Probably in the same way that Jake Gyllenhaal is supporting, which tells you more about Tom Cruise's sex life in the film than anybody outside criddic's fantasies would ever want to know.

Are you absolutely kidding me? Cruise's performance in Interview With the Vampire was one of the hammiest, shlockiest things I'd ever seen. If he deserved any award for it, it was a Razzie.

Not only is it a lousy performance, but how in the world can anyone consider it supporting?

i would have wished for Foster to win the Best Actress award instead of Lange... Foster in Nell was absolutely believable and her performance, believe it or not, made me cried... i was so rooting for her character's freedom and that she won't be a guinea pig for some scientists' lab research... and it was this Nell performance that made me absolutely admire Foster's work in totality...

here's wishing that she would eventually get her 3rd Best Actress Oscar in the near future...

Bullets Over Broadway
Ed Wood
Interview With the Vampire
Legends of the Fall
The Shawshank Redemption

DIRECTOR

Woody Allen, Bullets Over Broadway
Tim Burton, Ed Wood
Frank Darabont, The Shawshank Redemption
Neil Jordan, Interview With the Vampire
Edward Zwick, Legends of the Fall

[Zwick scores a second directing win. His first was 1989's Glory.]

ACTOR

Johnny Depp, Ed Wood
Morgan Freeman, The Shawshank Redemption
Tom Hanks, Forrest Gump
Paul Newman, Nobody's Fool
Brad Pitt, Legends of the Fall

[Freeman's second nod, after winning in 1989 for Driving Miss Daisy. Hanks continued his losing streak, following back-to-back losses in '92 (supporting for League of Their Own) and '93 (for Philadelphia). Newman finally makes it on the ballot. Pitt gained a nod in his first year of major stardom. In his second Burton-directed vehicle, Depp tops them all.]

ACTRESS

Jodie Foster, Nell
Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle
Julia Ormond, Legends of the Fall
Meg Ryan, When a Man Loves a Woman
Winona Ryder, Little Women

[Ryan had been nominated previously, for her comic work in 1989's When Harry Met Sally. Leigh debuts. Ryder offered a lovely performance in her film, making this her first nod. Ormond was seen as a rising star after her solid performance in Zwick's epic Western/WWI drama. However, it was Foster who won her second Best Actress Criddic Award. She'd of course won for 1991's The Silence of the Lambs.]

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Tom Cruise, Interview With the Vampire
Samuel L. Jackson, Pulp Fiction
Martin Landau, Ed Wood
Walter Matthau, I. Q.
Gary Sinise, Forrest Gump

[In a vampire role, Cruise claimed his third nomination. Dynamic Jackson and veteran Matthau entered for the first time, as did Sinise. Landau's touching portrayal of actor Bela Lugosi took the prize.]

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Kirsten Dunst, Interview With the Vampire
Melanie Griffith, Nobody's Fool
Helen Mirren, The Madness of King George
Uma Thurman, Pulp Fiction
Dianne Wiest, Bullets Over Broadway

[Only Wiest had claimed any nods before, and she'd won both of them in 1989 (Parenthood) and 1991 (Little Man Tate).]

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Bullets Over Broadway
Ed Wood
Heavenly Creatures
Pulp Fiction
Wes Craven's New Nightmare

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Forrest Gump
Interview With the Vampire
Legends of the Fall
Little Women
The Shawshank Redemption
