I mentioned on my blog that I think Stephen Boyd was at his best in dark character parts: the Nazi spy in The Man Who Never Was and Messala in Ben-Hur. Playing the hero, such as Fall of the Roman Empire, he was incredibly dull.

Yes, you are right.
I recently enjoyed Boyd's performance in the extremely campy The Oscar (1966). What a great cast....all playing to the gallery. I had been searching for this film for the longest time and then it turned up on TCM.
The film even notched up two Oscar nods!

The gay subtext was always there, though it wasn't talked about at the time.
I don't know that Stephen Boyd ever attained cult status. He was, however, extremely popular in the late 50s and early 60s. Let's not forget that it was he who was originally slated to star opposite Liz Taylor in Cleopatra until her illness caused so many delays that he had to drop out. He personally blamed the box office failure of The Fall of the Roman Empire for his suddenly gone cold career.
I suspect, as I said below, that it was the quirks of the Oscar nominating rules at the time that kept him out of the running for supporting actor in Ben-Hur combined with the fact that Hugh Griffith was the more revered actor that lost him his only chance at an Oscar. I still think the Globes got it right, though. Griffith's finest hour on screen was in Tom Jones, not Ben-Hur.

This is the reason why I -- seemingly alone on this board -- prefer Griffith, who at least adds a little energy to the film, to Boyd, who's solid in a solemn, vaguely dull sort of way.

It's possible that Stephen Boyd's name was submitted by MGM as a male lead in the film along with Charlton Heston and Jack Hawkins.
Hugh Griffith was a more prestigious name at the time as the star of Kitti Frings' Pulitzer prize winning play, Look Homeward Angel for which he and co-star Tony Perkins, leading lady Jo Van Fleet, director George Roy Hill and the play itself were all nominated for Tonys for the 1957-1958 season.

After receiving a GG nomination, wasn't Stephen Boyd the expected nominee from Ben-Hur in the supporting category? Where did Hugh Griffith nomination and eventual win come from? How was this perceived at the time?
