Simone Signoret is simply dazzling. Kate Hepburn would be my second choice.
"...it is the weak who are cruel, and...gentleness is only to be expected from the strong." - Leo Reston

"Cruelty might be very human, and it might be cultural, but it's not acceptable." - Jodie Foster

Elizabeth Taylor is a great favourite of mine, but not for this portrayal in "Suddenly Last Summer", for me she seems very much "over-the-top" and doesn't get belieavable

Doris Day is good but we all know she's been lot better before and after.

Simone Signoret is also good and a deservable winner, but she's not on par with the two others

Hepburn vs. Hepburn

Katharine is great as Mrs. Violet Venable, Katharine is as Elizabeth in the same movie very "Over-the-top", but she's in a god way à la Dunaway in Mommie Dearest. She also gives me vibes of Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd.

But Audrey is so sweet and natural for her role in "The Nun's Story", so i'm going to vote for her.

Over looked:
MONROE, and Emmanuelle Riva in "Hiroshima mon Amour" but it wasn't eligible for 1959 years Oscar but for 1960.

Also some may say Dandridge in "Porgy and Bess". I consider Remick in "Anatomy of a Murder" a supporting role, but some say she's leading.
