Re: 1993 Oscar Shouldabeens
Glad to see the underrated Gettysburg get some recognition. It wouldn't quite make my top ten list of 1993 (strong year), but I did shortlist it in a few categories--Supporting Actor for the great Richard Jordan, Randy Edelman's appropriately epic score, the great editing and sound work.

Rosie Perez is the Best Supporting Actress performance in Fearless, not Rossellini, IMO. Her breakdown in the car is simply unforgettable.
The thing is, i can't stand Rosie Perez on screen, probably it has something to do with her voice. She gave a good performance in 'Fearless' but i was more impressed with Rossellini. Maybe it's because i had heard so many raves about Perez, that i watched the film waiting for something extraordinary. On the other hand Rossellini, an actress i also never particularly cared for (and haven't since), stood out for me, as her performance of an ordinary woman trying to cope with people that have been in extreme circumstances, gave the much needed balance to the film.

On recommendation from our old friend Johnny Guitar, I revisited 'Carlito's Way' for the first time in almost a decade. I remember upon my initial viewing thinking that it was one of the most stylishly cool films I had ever seen. I still had my reservations about much of Pacino's voice over, but on the whole just a terrific viewing experience.
Ten years later, I still can't shake that feeling. My reservations remain the same. Pacino's performance is something of a mixed bag, but far more iconic and interesting to me than his ham-sandwich work in 'Scarface', but my opinion on his voice over hasn't changed terribly much. Especially in the bombastic epilogue. His relationship with Penelope Ann Miller's character remains somewhat underdeveloped, but had they chosen a better refrain than 'You Are So Beautiful To Me' I might be more onboard.
The film itself is a terrific time, extremely well-directed with an extremely suspenseful final act. The brutality of violence in this film never appears needlessly brutal or graphic, just finite, jarringly conclusive. Sean Penn's final scene itself is one of the most unnerving death scenes I've ever seen.
I wouldn't imagine it was seen as much for awards consideration (although, I'd say it was absolutely robbed for Best Art Direction among other technical prizes). I see now that it only received Globe nominations for Penn and Miller, the latter of whom I can't imagine was considered more than a fluke pick, all the actresses from 'Short Cuts' cancelling and Gong Li...just ignored for some reason. But what about Sean Penn's deliriously ugly performance. Only Sean Penn can sell out like this. One of the most deliciously twitchy jackass performances I've ever seen. I can't rank him above Pete Postlethwaite's heartbreakingly subtle tour de force, but was Penn seen as a more likely choice? And were reviews for 'Carlito's Way' more than mixed?
