I just watched "The Philadelphia Story" for the first time in years. It does not disappoint. The entire cast is perfectly in synch except for Mr. Stewart at certain times; I think it's that he and his girl friday look just a little too overdressed (aren't these two supposed to be contemptuous of the rich?), but some of his most poignant awkwardness is on fine display, as well as the lowest I've seen his forehead get in the drunk scene with Cary Grant.

I couldn't help but feel that the play was just made for the stage, though. Most of the laughs I had were in the behavior between the lines like Cary Grant's little head duck-in after tartly dismissing Stewart on their first meeting. But shouldn't this dialogue be just a little more quickly paced than it is? I'd say that maybe they were spacing it out a little for laughs but I can't imagine anybody needing such time for a laugh as is provided actually doing so. It's a wonderful film and the childlike twinness between Grant and Hepburn really sneaks up on you (man, should he have won!), but I think I prefer the year's other two comedic gems: "His Girl Friday" and especially "The Shop Around the Corner."
"How's the despair?"

Joshua, I just found your question about Frank Morgan. He was great in both The Mortal Storm and The Shop Around the Corner, again in support of Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart. I like them better in Shop, Morgan better in Storm, but all three are excellent in both. Morgan's early portrayal of a victim of Naziism is still powerful no matter how many similar characters we've since seen.

My take on the 1940 Best Actress race - Both Hepburn and Roz cancell each other out for their comic performances and Joan Fontaine wins for her dramatic turn in Rebecca!

Magilla, I haven't seen The Mortal Storm, for which you reward Frank Morgan with his supporting actor nod for this year, but I assume his work in the film must be pretty special, as I consider his turn in The Shop Around the Corner to be one of the loveliest, most touching pieces of acting I've seen from this decade.

On another note, I'd have given best actress of 1940 to Rosalind Russell over Hepburn, although I'd pull my hair out rather than choose between these two exquisite comic performances for real.
