I really do love Barton Fink. I couldn't begin to say how many times I've watched this damn thing, but the first was with my grandfather and I found it so strange that he loved it so much. Jonathan Rosenbaum is right that this movie is less about what is right about people than who is a fraud, and this is a troubling concept. In Barton Fink more than perhaps any other movie of theirs, I am fine with this. It's an assimilation of various figures into a paranoid Hollywood state of mind that is fairly delicious in lieu of its dubious characterizations.

I can understand this flop picture proving outwardly distasteful to Academy voters but retroactively I'm inclined to say that I've yet to see any cinematography from 1991 I'd herald as stronger visual storytelling. It's incredibly depressing to see that even the more discerning ASC opted for Dean Cundey of the muddy Hook and Stephen Goldblatt of the glossy The Prince of Tides instead. I'm a bit surprised that Michael Lerner was chosen instead of industry darling John Goodman who gives a much more rounded and substantial performance. Lerner is just one of the many amusing archetypes that Fink encounters. I think I would cite it for Art Direction and Costume Design over the nominees without much deliberation. I think without Horracks or Davis, the Supporting Actress lineup is rather weak, as is the Best Actor lineup of which I wouldn't include a single nominee (Hopkins delegated to Supporting).

Renée Zellweger's monologue in Down With Love goes on seemingly forever; the best part of it is Ewan McGregor's flabbergasted reaction shot.

Anna Magnani in "A Human Voice", one of the two episodes in the Roberto Rossellini movie "L'Amore". (But that was of course a famous stage monologue).

Ned Beatty's monologue in Network is pretty arresting (if not a bit histrionic at times). And Beatrice Straight's monologue in the same film seamlessly travels through rage, shock, disbelief, compassion, defiance, and wifely obedience in about eight minutes. It's a great, mesmerizingly genuine performance in a film populated by artificial characters and stereotypes.

My bad. I meant Gary Oldman.

I agree about Sutherland's performance. Who knew I could be so entertained by a monologue for twenty some minutes? Can anyone name other films that have played on that technique before? I can't.

Funny. I just revisited this thread last night while watching scenes from JFK. I was wondering why it was that Tommy Lee Jones got the nomination when the juiciest supporting part is Donald Sutherland's. I mean, how can you compete with that 20-minute monologue?!
If they could pick only one male supporting performance to nominate from JFK I think Jones was the best choice. I thought his character had many complex layers and his scenes with Costner and Sinise were pretty juicy themselves.

But I think Sutherland would have been a good choice also. I LOVED Sutherland's scene in JFK. It is one of my favorite scenes of that decade's films. The skilled mixture of fact and fiction, the skillful editing of flashbacks, and the mixture of authority and mystery Sutherland projected created a scene that made my head spin.

First rate work by Sutherland, Stone, co-writer (with Stone) Zachary Sklar, editors Pietro Scala and Joe Hutsching (they won well-deserved Oscars for this work) and cinematographer Robert Richardson (perhaps the best Oscar awarded that night. His work added so much to that film.)[/color]
