Seeing The English Patient on the front row of a packed 800 seats theater still remains, twelve years after it happened, one the my greatest cinematic experiences.

I was completely overwelmed by the greatness of this film and it still remains one of my favourite films of all time. I was then starting to date the woman the eventually became (and still remains) my wife, so my emotional connection to this film is very big.

Also, I think Ralph Fiennes deserved the oscar for this (and don't start me about he was robbed for Schindler's List...).

Oh, and I also think Shine is pure trash

Ugh! 'Shine' is one of the worst nominated films of the decade. Saccharine and unbelievable. Lifetime at best. I'm not one for beating the shit out of the mentally ill, but that fucker wouldn't be able to walk after I was through with him. Jesus Christ. What an annoying piece of shit.

I'LL STOP HITTING YOU WHEN YOU STOP BEING CRAZY AND ANNOYING! NOW STOP IT!

Well this Picture tally is much better than the 1998 one (I agree with Sabin -- The Thin Red Line deserves better than the indignity of a tie with Saving Private Ryan) but how did T Crazy get second place with 10 POINTS? How many times did Criddic get to vote??

I'm glad to see though that my pick in Penelope's Elimination game (Harrelson) also wins here. Though given the runner-up, maybe I shouldn't be.

I also liked him in The Private War of Major Benson, The Omega Man, Soylent Green and the TV remake of Treasure Island, though most of them were entertaining flawed movies. He is particularly likable in Major Benson, though (later remade as Major Payne).

I have yet to see Major Dundee or his version of A Man for All Seasons.

Especially considering everybody else in those same movies acts circles around (and over and under) him.

I liked Heston a lot in Hamlet, but I wouldn't hold up his work in Ben-Hur and Ten Commandments (both movies I enjoy) as examples of what makes him a great actor.

Consider his performances in The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, Will Penny. He was rarely subtle, but neither were most of the people he portrayed. Yet, many people would not have been believable in the same roles, while he was.

It's not so much the award itself that reveals the source of my amusement but couching as such:
He was very good as Player King in Branagh's masterpiece. Besides, when would I ever have had a better chance to honor the great actor?

Also, some of the reviews of his performance justified his nomination. Ebert described his performance as "magnificently assured." I just happened to agree.
