I found Marvin's Room competent enough as such things go, but can't find anything outstanding in the performances of Keaton or Streep. At least Streep had to work with an - in my opinion - intensely dislikeable character. From memory, the list of 'serious' best actress contenders that year was very weak - stepping from the nominees right down to Debbie Reynolds and Madonna, so I guess one of them was bound to make it.
