I'm glad I don't remember where Mr. Holland's Opus was on my list but I know I'm not going to be proud if I ever do.

Um, I don't need to go back to that era. I thought Mr. Holland's Opus was the second-best movie that year at the time.

I watched Apollo 13 tonight for the first time in ages. It's a perfectly competent piece of filmmaking. All of its successes are completely understandable, but I remember being far more entranced in the theaters. Ah, to be 14 again!

This movie sets some form of record for cheesy music cues. This is some of the most obnoxious music that James Horner has composed. Not the trumpet anthem, but everything else is just corny as hell. Dean Semler's cinematography finely evokes the unease of space and the performances are across the board superlative. That being said, there is an unfortunate redundancy to several scenes that could be best summarized as "You do your job!" "I'm doing my job!" "I do my job and you do your job!" This is merely an observation. I appreciate that the film's aspirations are honorably rooted in docudrama and would loathe the alternative. In addition, everything earthbound is really quite dull. I like Apollo 13. It's a good movie but I can't begin to muster up any enthusiasm outside of what it represents which is a great story, very competently told, free of compromise.

I know that I would never want it nominated for anything above the line, but I can understand how it went missing out on a nomination for Ron Howard. It honestly feels like a movie more produced than directed. A movie like Cinderella Man, Frost/Nixon, and even A Beautiful Mind required a more hands-on approach with actors. This is a lot of coverage of performances that practically direct themselves chiseled together in post. I can't help but feel a little bad for the guy for his competency, but the Director's Branch demonstrated fine taste by nominated Mike Figgis, Chris Noonan, and Tim Robbins in his stead.

I can also understand how Braveheart managed to win. The film is ludicrous but it's nothing if not passionate. It's a shame that such a fantastic year found itself so low-balled by Academy voters.

Just because it's still that good. This scene is gorgeous.

This thread can also guide us with some of our choices; here is my list of 1995 Oscar Shouldabeens (note: remember that I create my lists based on the year of initial release, regardless of when it played in the US--thus, films that are elgible for the Oscars in 1995, such as Wild Reeds, Priest, Muriel's Wedding, etc., would show up on my 1994 Oscar Shouldabeens).

'Y Tu Mama Tambien', 'Murmur of the Heart' and 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn' are among the best films I've ever seen, and I seem to be a one man band in my estimation that 'Rushmore' is the greatest film of all time. I'm referring to the year of your Lord 1995 when in America, a fledgling young Freshman named Sabin was treated to a world of romance in the theaters...which he promptly passed up on for maybe five more years until he saw the damn things. I swear, back when it would've mattered, I would've adopted a scruff beard and prattled on about the Algerians. Maybe it would've helped me get laid.

You're right i don't think so. I can think of some good coming of age films

Rushmore
Billy Elliot
City of God
Breakfast Club
Dead Poets Society
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Souffle au Coeur
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn

but not in the same year.
