I don't know if Tina Turner would even have been nominated. She may be a great singer, but she has yet to prove herself as an actress.

There's no telling how much damage Margaret Avery's "thank God" Variety ad did to her chances, but they undoubtedly helped Oprah in that a number of voters determined to vote for one of the Color Purple ladies would likely have shifted their votes to her. Anjelica, on the other hand, was practically unstoppable. Remember, this was an actress whose film debut in A Walk With Love and Death years earlier was something akin to the embarrassment later endured by Sophia Coppola in Godfather III. That she would emerge from the shadow of her father and long-time lover Jack Nicholson in a film dominated by the two of them was seen as something of an acting miracle in its time and still holds up pretty well today. The only question was whether her father would win a directing Oscar for the same film.

Aleandro wasn't on my radar in 1985 and when I saw the film later I thought she was good but no more so than the five women I nominated.

I wonder what the inclusion of Tina Turner in the Shug Avery role in The Color Purple might've done to this race. Or was Angelica simply that untouchable?

Big Magilla, how could you not have Norma Aleandro in your Best Actress lineup? ???

My god, whatever happened to Meg Tilly? I'm watching The Big Chill right now and I really like her in it (although the unsung hero of that film, for me, is the non-nominated Mary Kay Place). Tilly has just sort of disappeared. Her last imdb credit is from 1995. Had no idea she was half-Chinese, too.

Reza wrote:Best Actress
Norma Aleandro, The Official Story

Finally, saw Norma Aleandro in The Official Story and wow, what an astoundingly good performance. The look on her face as her friend recounts the torture she endured is just plain haunting. The two friends are laughing and drinking over old times and her friend unexpectedly segues into a horrific tale. And then the slow realization that Aleandro's adopted daughter, who's sleeping in the next room, might've been one of the babies taken away from expectant mothers under interrogation -- amazingly intense acting.

I loved the scene where Alicia encounters a demonstration of people calling for the relocation of displaced persons. Aleandro delivers the perfect balance of horror, complicity, shame, befuddlement and confusion as she stands on the sidelines, arrested by the scene before her. I'm truly shocked that Aleandro didn't receive a Best Actress nomination for this. It's a fantastic tour-de-force.

As an interesting sidenote: Alicia's daughter in the film is named Gaby. Aleandro would receive her first (and, to date, only) nomination two years later for her supporting performance in Gaby: A True Story.

The Official Story is playing on Showtime on Sunday, March 18 at 5AM if you want to set your TiVo or DVR.
