Glad to see I'm not alone in thinking Manhattan the truly best film of the year (and, for me, Woody's crowning achievement).

It was a good year (the last for some time), but many of the better films -- even Kramer and Breaking Away -- seemed a bit more house-broken than what we'd seen in the early 70s. This presaged a decade of far more traditional, remote/historical, far less angry films than we'd been used to.

Apocalypse Now, like Raging Bull, has been, in retrospect, forgiven its failings, but I still think its a film more notable for its striving than for its success quotient. Kramer vs. Kramer is close to perfect, but a bit of a miniature. I voted for Breaking Away -- a lovely piece -- though I like all the films in one way or another.

Breaking Away, easily.

Apocalypse Now has many magnificent moments but falls apart once Brando waddles on screen.

One of the most impressive Best Picture lineups in the Academy's history, though I would have switched "Norma Rae" for "Manhattan."

Still, "Apocalypse Now."

Were 'Manhattan' nominated...

I choose 'Apocalypse Now'. 'Breaking Away' is lovely though.
"How's the despair?"
