Add to that the fact that Claire Trevor was Hollywood royalty whose genrousity of spriit was well known within the industry. She is credited as much as John Ford with giving John Wayne the chance to shine in Stagecoach in which she had top billing. They made a couple of other films together and remained life-long friends. Here they are together again, Wayne now the biggest star in the world while Trevor's career was moving into its twilight period 8 years after she received her Oscar for Key Largo. She really made the most of a throwaway part and was justly recognized by her friends within the Academy.

Sterling's "big scene" in The High and The Mighty is the movie's best (only?) really good moment - realistic, raw, beautiful acting from an undeservedly forgotten but obviously talented, unusual actress. Eva Marie Saint deserved the Oscar of course, but Jan Sterling would have been my second choice among the nominees that year (she also won the Golden Globe, for what it's worth).

Claire Trevor has a longer, but certainly less interesting role. As you remember, she has one good scene though - a monologue where she goes from laughing to crying in one take, and where her character reveals the loneliness under the smiling, girlish surface. I think her nomination was due to this.

I found it very similar to the scene where Lee Grant cuts her hair off in Voyage of the Damned (1976). The difference is Miss Grant's overacting. That still did not deter the Academy from nominating her.

Claire Trevor's nod for The High and the Mighty remains a head scratcher!

I have it on DVD--it hadn't been available, either on video or for TV broadcast for many years, and was released last year--the last time I'd seen it was probably nearly 30 years ago, when it was still available for TV broadcast--so seeing it again on DVD was fun. I have a soft spot for Claire Trevor, which is why I rank her slightly higher--although, admittedly, the scene where Sterling removes her makeup is incredible.
