Maybe that's where the confusion comes in. Besides, I thought you weant by Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide for your release dates. Maltin long ago corrected the date to 1942.
Easy to fix 1941. Removed Sullivan's Travels and substituted The Lady Eve so Preston Sturges stays put.

Added it to the 1942 lineup bumping The Magnificent Ambersons.

I'm glad to see someone else appreciates this lovely performance.

I've often wondered how such an awful person could be such a wonderful actor.

A number of you guys have Sullivan's Travels listed here on your list amongst the best of 1942 while I have this film on my list of 1941. However, IMBd lists it as a December 1941 release. I suppose you will say that it was released in L.A. in 1942 which made it eligible for the 1942 Oscars. Now where do you guys get this bit of information from - the release date for the Oscar qualifying run? Does the IMBd list only the N.Y. release date of a film?

I will have to change a number of my lists going by this criteria.

I don't recall Rick specifically being a Communist, although Howard Koch, who wrote most of the film's political things (the Epstein brothers handled the romantic elements) was a lefty who was later blacklisted. There is reference made of the fact that Rick fought for the Loyalists in the Spanish Civil War, and most Americans who did so were probably members of the Communist Party, although others were "progressives," socialists and liberals.

I'm watching Casablanca while TA-ing for my Aesthetics of Cinema class (thank God for wireless), and I came across a small capsule online by Rosenbaum where he posits that Rick used to be a communist before seeking out those Casablancan waters. Is this true?

If so, it would be fitting that he was in Paris for a time. His constant refrain of "I stick my neck out for no one." could indicate more than a broken heart, but broken dreams. He leaves American, a country that will not permit his ideals; he leaves France, a country that reminds him too much of a lost love. He becomes a consummate capitalist in Casablanca.

Incidentally after some 20-odd viewings of this movie (most of them mandatory), I'm inclined to say that it's a movie I can slip back into again and again without reservation. The only part of the film that my attention wavers from is the flashback to the days of Rick and Ilsa in Paris. Maybe it's that true love pales in comparison to fetishized hopeless romance and cynicism in Rick's.

It also struck me just how quickly Casablanca moves along on the strengths of its pleasures, its atmosphere. Ilsa doesn't show up until almost 25 minutes into the movie and you wouldn't know it.
