I haven't seen Albertson, but he'd have a hard time beating Johnson's wonderous performance.

Joel Grey was so fantastic that I had to go with him. But Young, Johnson, and De Niro are all excellent performances as well.

In fact almost every winner from this bunch was pretty much a ''distinguished'' character actor - the kind of actor this award was made for in the first place. Of the lot, De Niro and Joel Grey were the ''youngsters'' in the bunch and the brilliance of the characters (and ofcourse their performances) helped them win in this category.

dws, this is not an undistinguished group. Oscar actually got it right more often than not in this decade. My favorite is Jack Albertson, repeating his blustery stage triumph of a type of character very prevalent not only in the 40s when The Subject Was Roses takes place, but through the late 60s, the time of the play and film.

Like Albertson, most of the winners, Ben Johnson in particular, were long time character actors getting their best roles late in life. John Houseman essentially played the same character thereafter, but his snippy professor was something new and welcome at the time.

Voted for DeNiro, although I was going to change my vote to Joel Grey--who I think is the heart and soul of Cabaret--right before it clicked over. Certainly either one stands out the most in this pretty undistinguished group. Ben Johnson also would've been pretty deserving.

Which of these winners of Best Supporting Actor is the best?
