R.I.P. Christopher Plummer

Whether they are behind the camera or in front of it, this is the place to discuss all filmmakers regardless of their role in the filmmaking process.

After he lost his late-in-career Oscar nomination for The Last Station, I wondered if that was it, if he had missed his chance to be saluted late in career. Then he found an even sweeter late-in-career nomination for Beginners, a very lovely movie that is admittedly a triumph of brilliant casting rather than brilliant acting. But when the result is so charming, who honestly cares? Also, a wonderful speech:

I'm always interested in people who rewrite their obituaries late in life. For the better part of his existence, Plummer would have been lionized as an imperious classical actor, held in both respect and wariness for extensive stage work, but doomed to be most remembered for a blockbuster success he mostly looked upon with disdain.

However, three nominations and an Oscar win, as well as a late-life mellowing (including rapprochement with the Sound of Music team), paints him in simultaneously brighter and more nuanced colors.

The man's been famous most of my cognizant life, doing impressive work year after year. (If you haven't watched his Barrymore, I heartily recommend it.) A salute at his passing.

A bump on the head will do it. It's getting really scary out there for actors of a certain age.

Very sad news... this year has not been kind to nonagenarian actors/actresses.
