Those of you who were around here in 1998 might remember this, taken from the trivia section of Bob Hope's IMDb. page. We discussed it at some length back then.

"Was incorrectly declared dead several times since retiring from the public eye. On the most infamous occasion in 1998, a wire service accidentally posted a pre-written obituary to a Web page. A member of the US House of Representatives saw this bogus news flash and announced Hope's death during a session at the Capitol. Hope learned he was dead when a reporter called his home asking for a statement. According to family members, Hope took this mistake in good humor."

He died five years later at 100.

The same thing happened to Tom Petty several years ago. First there were reports of his death, then the media had to retract it until he did die several hours later. It's pretty gruesome. Hopefully the families are too involved in other matters to care. It can't give them any comfort.

(Still feels strange to type "Tom Petty died" three years later.)

Rarely is the famous quote from Mark Twain (“Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated”) so apropos.

I cannot imagine how her friends and family must feel about this shitshow of an announcement.

Apparently it has been reported that she has not passed away but is in critical condition.

Tanya Roberts, Bond girl and Charlie's Angel, dies at 65

04 January 2021 Entertainment & Arts

US actress Tanya Roberts, best known for her roles in Bond film A View to a Kill and the final season of Charlie's Angels, has died aged 65.

Her death was announced by her friend and agent Mike Pingel, who called her "the sweetest person you'd ever meet".

Roberts, who appeared opposite Sir Roger Moore in his final Bond film, also starred in The Beastmaster and Sheena: Queen of the Jungle.

In recent years she had a recurring role on That '70's Show.

Roberts collapsed while walking her dogs on 24 December and was admitted to Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre.

No cause has been given for her death on Sunday, though according to the Hollywood Reporter it was not Covid-19 related.

Born Victoria Leigh Blum in 1955, Roberts grew up in New York before moving to Hollywood in 1977.

Her big break came when she replaced Shelly Hack in Charlie's Angels, joining Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd as third 'Angel' Julie.

After the show's cancellation, she appeared in such fantasy adventure films as The Beastmaster and Hearts and Armour.

She also played comic book heroine Sheena in a 1984 film that saw her nominated for a Golden Raspberry award for worst actress.

Roberts earned another Razzie nomination for her role as geologist Stacey Sutton in 1985 Bond film A View to a Kill.

She admitted being "a little cautious" about taking the role but said it would have been "ridiculous" to have turned it down.

Roberts' subsequent films included Night Eyes and Inner Sanctum, erotic thrillers that did little to advance her career.

She went on to play Midge Pinciotti in more than 80 episodes of That '70's Show made between 1998 and 2004.

Britt Ekland, who starred opposite Sir Roger in 1974's The Man with the Golden Gun, was among those to pay tribute.

"RIP Tanya Roberts," the Swedish actress wrote on Twitter , adding: "Once a Bond Girl always a Bond Girl!"

Don Coscarelli, who directed Roberts in The Beastmaster, remembered her as being "a beautiful person, inside and out".

"I will always remember Tanya for being incredibly sweet and for her genuine love of animals," he wrote on Twitter .
