Along with Hunter Thompson, and maybe Norman Mailer, he did more to change/enliven American journalism in the last half-century. The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and The Right Stuff are glorious reads, great books. The Bonfire of the Vanities was a compulsive page-turner, but its societal view curdled by the end. And A Man in Full was way over-written, though not without its high points. I never read the later stuff.

Let's say there are few writers with whom I had such political differences that I enjoyed reading so much. A salute.
