German film-maker FRANK BEYER has died after succumbing to a long illness. He was 74.

One of communist East Germany's most renowned directors, Beyer was best known for his Warsaw ghetto drama JACOB THE LIAR, in which a Jewish prisoner attempts to spread hope through the ghetto with invented reports about German military defeats.

It was the first and only East German film to be nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. The picture was remade in 1999 starring Robin Williams.

Beyer won the German Film Prize for his contribution to cinema in 1991, one year after Germany reunified.
