This probably looks like a local NY story, but it reaches more of you than you think.

Dan Talbot is more responsible than just about anyone else for keeping foreign-language films viable in the U.S. He ran a series of Upper West Side theatres that exhibited them -- from the New Yorker on 88th and Broadway to the Lincoln Plaza opposite Lincoln Center, which (as the obit notes) is sadly closing next month -- and also headed companies that distributed them. It's possible he tried to hang on too long without preparing a good line of succession (that's the opinion of a distributor friend of mine), but no one can deny his huge influence on the cinema we've seen over the past 50 years. I feel certain Damien would be crushed by this news.
