He was a true icon. I'm surprised Hollywood never made a film about his life. Maybe now that he's gone, they will. He slowed down, but never stopped, constantly appearing as himself in countless documentaries and acting on occasion. He has a small part in the upcoming Donald Sutherland-Helen Mirren film, The Leisure Seeker.

Not sure how well-known he is to younger folk, but he was a hugely successful comedian in the early 60s, and then a major voice in the Civil Rights movement.
