BUENOS AIRES -- Uruguayan helmer-scribe Juan Pablo Rebella, who co-directed Cannes-laureled "Whisky," was found dead Thursday in Montevideo. He was 32.
His girlfriend and Pablo Stoll, who co-directed "Whisky" and "25 Watts," found him in his apartment with a gunshot to the head and a revolver on the floor. Police are investigating, but suspect suicide. They said he likely died late Wednesday.Rebella and Stoll, who were working on the script for their third feature, were pioneers of Uruguay's new film movement. They began with two acclaimed shorts "Buenos y santos" and "Victor y los Elejidos."Rebella "was an intelligent artist with witty and affable humor and also a generous friend at times of success ... sharing the prizes of his films with those that worked on them," the Uruguayan Assn. of Film and Video Producers and Filmmakers said."Whisky," which won more than a dozen awards including Un Certain Regard jury prize and Fipresci critics kudos at Cannes in 2004, tells the story of two brothers' rivalry and relationship with the same woman.The black-and-white fest fave "25 Watts" is a minimalist tale of three friends spending a day with nothing to do.Rebella was a partner with Stoll and Fernando Epstein in Montevideo-based Control-Z Films.They were working with Hernan Musaluppi's Buenos Aires-based Rizoma Films on their next film, after teaming up on the recent Rotterdam Tiger winner, "The Dog Pound."

What a tragedy! Whisky is a wonderful film that deserves to be widely seen. Big loss for Uruguay and the film world at large.

Juan Pablo Rebella, the Uruguayan co-director of "Whisky" and "25 Watts" was found dead at his home. He committed suicide. He was 32 years old.Wisky was released last year in New York and won the Fipresci award at the Cannes Film festival in 2004.
