Pitt and Jolie to Sell Baby Photos for Charity

Jun 5, 2:30 PM (ET)

NEW YORK (AP) - Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt will give the world its first peek at their newborn daughter by releasing photos of Shiloh Nouvel, with profits going to charity.

The images, taken at a private photo shoot, will be distributed by Getty Images, the photo agency said Monday. All profits will be given to charity, though no specific foundation was announced.

"While we celebrate the joy of the birth of our daughter, we recognize that two million babies born every year in the developing world die on the first day of their lives," the couple said in a joint statement. "These children can be saved, but only if governments around the world make it a priority."

Deb Trevino, a spokeswoman for Getty Images, told The Associated Press the family would later name the charity that will receive the funds. She would not disclose how much the photos were being sold for, or when they would be distributed.

A call by the AP to Pitt's publicist, Cindy Guagenti, was not immediately returned Monday.

Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt was born May 27 in Namibia. In the weeks leading up to the birth, the couple retreated to the African country for government-assisted privacy. Delivered by Caesarean section, the baby weighed 7 pounds and was said to be in good health.

The couple have yet to make a public appearance since the birth.

Jolie, 30, has two adopted children: 16-month-old Zahara, from Ethiopia, and 4-year-old Maddox, from Cambodia. Both had their surnames legally changed to Jolie-Pitt after Pitt announced his intentions to adopt the children as well.

Pitt, 42, and Jennifer Aniston divorced last year.

I don't know if this has been discussed elsewhere but what do we all think of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt being in talks to play Dagny Taggart and John Galt, respectively, in the film adapation of Atlas Shrugged? The two of them, with their larger-than-life, iconic, somewhat worldly personas could be exactly what these monolithic characters need. I can definitely see Angelina taking on Taggart and Brad Pitt could shine as the mythical Galt. On the other hand, it could be a monumental Eyes Wide Shut-style flopperama. I can't say just yet. I love that book so I'm weary to even get excited about this.

Jolie and Pitt donate funds to Namibian maternity wards

AFP

Hollywood couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt will donate 300,000 dollars (235,000 euros) to the maternity wards of two state hospitals in Namibia following the birth of their daughter in the southern African country.

"We want to contribute to Namibia and the people who have been so gracious to us at this time," they said in a statement released Monday by the Namibian government.

The funds will be used to purchase medical equipment for the maternity wards at the state hospitals in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay on Namibia's west coast.

"This will contribute significantly to the health of Namibian babies," said Leon Jooste, the deputy minister of environment and tourism in the statement.

The couple will also give 15,000 dollars to a school and a community centre at a squatter camp outside Swakopmund that Jolie and Pitt visited earlier this month.

Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt was born early Sunday near Swakopmund, some 400 kilometers (250 miles) from the capital of Windhoek.

The girl is the couple's first biological child.

Jolie adopted two children, Maddox from Cambodia in 2002 and Zahara from Ethiopia last year. Their surnames have been changed to Jolie-Pitt.

The golden couple and the two adopted children checked into a beach resort near Swakopmund in early April. Their bodyguards and Namibian police have shielded them from paparazzi.

1. Does anybody else think that Shiloh should be a boy's name rather than a girl's name.

2. And why Nouvel? Isn't that the French masculine for "new"? Shouldn't they be using the feminine, Nouvelle?

Pitt and Jolie have baby daughter
BBC News

Hollywood couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are celebrating the birth of their daughter in Namibia, Africa.

The actors named their daughter Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, spokeswoman Cindy Guagenti said in a statement.

Pitt and Jolie moved to Namibia in April amid intense media interest in the impending birth.

Jolie, 30, has two adopted children, from Ethiopia and Cambodia. She and Pitt were linked romantically soon after filming Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005.

"The night of May 27, 2006 in Namibia, Africa, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt welcomed their daughter Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt. No further information is being given," Ms Guagenti said.

Namibia's deputy enviroment and tourism minister, Leon Jooste, said the baby was born at 0140 local time (0040 GMT) on Sunday.

Media crackdown

It has been reported that the first picture of the baby would be sold for up to $3 million (£1.6m), with the proceeds being given to Unicef, who Jolie works for as an ambassador, and other projects in Africa.

However, Ms Guagenti has said no photographs would be released.

The government of Nambia helped Pitt and Jolie in their quest for privacy by refusing entry to reporters wanting to cover the baby's birth without the couple's written permission.

A South African photographer was arrested on Wednesday for a second time after he tried to take pictures of the couple at a local restaurant, according to reports. Others have been asked to leave the country.

The beach by the hotel where the couple have been staying - in the village of Langstrand - has been surrounded with large green barriers, while bodyguards and undercover police officers are patrolling the area.

'Heavy-handed'

The BBC's Frauke Jensen in the country's capital, Windhoek, said the security operation was unprecedented.
A local human rights group has accused bodyguards and police of using "heavy-handed tactics" to keep the paparazzi at bay.

It is unclear whether the baby was born in Langstrand, or one of the hospitals in the nearby towns of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.

Staff at the private Welwitschia hospital near Swakopmund refused to comment on reports Jolie had given birth there.

"We may not say anything to the media. We had to sign papers that we would not reveal anything to reporters," the Agence France Presse news agency quoted a staff member as saying.

Namibian citizen

Sawkopmund municipality spokesman Freddi Kaukunga said: "We are proud that such a world-famous actress like Angelina Jolie chose to give birth to her first child in our area.

"We wish mother and daughter good health and a continued further stay here."

He added the child would now be considered a Namibian citizen.

Pitt, 42, divorced actress Jennifer Aniston last October, while Jolie - star of the Tomb Raider movies - was previously married to actors Billy-Bob Thornton and Jonny Lee Miller.

Last year Pitt announced his intention to become Jolie's children's adoptive father.

According to this rag, Angelina Jolie is having a caesarean this weekend.

WORLDWIDE EXCLUSIVE! Angelina scheduled for
C-section Saturday, May 27

Friday, May 26, 8:00 p.m. ET

Angelina Jolie is scheduled to give birth by Caesarean section tomorrow, Saturday, May 27, In Touch has learned exclusively.

Although she had really wanted to have a natural birth, Angelina's doctors are urging her to have the procedure due to a minor complication. "There's nothing seriously wrong,” an insider says. "They are expecting it all to be routine.”

Angelina, 30, is scheduled to have the C-section at a Namibian hospital, according to the insider. The father of the child, Brad Pitt, 42, is expected to be by her side.

Angelina had been planning to give birth at the Burning Shore Beach Lodge in Swakopmund — the African resort where she, Brad and her two adopted children, Maddox, 4, and Zahara, 16 months, have been staying for the past two months. But the doctors have advised her she will be safer in a hospital.

The baby, a girl, will be delivered by her American ob-gyn, assisted by local doctors, the insider adds. “Everyone is very excited, Maddox in particular,” says an insider in Africa. “He knows he is getting a new baby sister, now they are telling him how soon it will be.”

The long-awaited birth is a week before Angelina's June 3 due date.
