I voted for L.A. Confidential, probably because it's my favorite movie of the bunch, but he was, IMO, also the best thing (actually, come to think of it, the only good thing) about the bland The Quick and the Dead, which you didn't list for some reason. I thought that he actually made the movie somewhat watchable.
Virtuosity is trash. Why did you list that movie?

An exceedingly mediocre talent.
He is utterly unimpressive in The Insider, L.A. Confidential, Gladiator and Cinderella Man, and unbearable for most of A Beautiful Mind. I picked Master & Commander, not because there was more to like in this performance, but because there was less to dislike. At least there's a touch of charm here, and he doesn't even look as if he's straining himself to put it across.

"What the hell?"

I don't see any real similarities between the character in Gladiator, Proof of Life and Master and Commander.

Just because he played different characters doesn't mean that the characters aren't the same type. I'd have to say that after The Insider, Crowe has been playing basically the same character with the exception of the embarrassment that was A Beautiful Mind.criddic3 wrote:Here is a great actor, who consistently amazes with a wide-range of convincing performances. Whether as a conflicted skin-head in the controversial Romper Stomper, a computer-generated villain in Virtuosity, a brawny police detective who finds out he is more than that in L. A. Confidential or a sea-captain in Master and Commander, Russell Crowe always seems to fit the part.
An Oscar-winner for playing an enslaved former general in the popular summer epic Gladiator in 2000, Crowe was actually on his second of three consecutive nods at the time. He was nominated in the Best Actor category a year earlier for his portrayal of a middle-aged, chubby tabacco-industry whistle-blower in The Insider. One year after his win, he again scored a nod with his role as a genius mathematician who succumbs to schizophrenia, only to come back victoriously hailed for his work years later in A Beautiful Mind. He lost the former to Kevin Spacey in American Beauty and the latter to Denzel Washington in Training Day, respectively. His second loss was percieved as due in part to his bad-boy behavior at the British Academy Awards earlier that season.
Despite his antics off-screen, this actor remains admired for his talent in front of it. Select your favorite Russell Crowe performance.
