You learn something new every day. With these nominations I learned that House of Wax and Saw II were action/adventure films and Inside Deep Throat was a drama, and here I thought the first two were horror films and the third a documentary. But of course they don't have horror film and documentary categories so they have to shoehorn such golorious works of art into whatever category they can.

Deuce Bigolo not only gets nominated in five regular categories it gets a special recognition award as well. The movies have gone to hell and so has advertising gleefully patting itself on the back. "The Devil's Rejects" indeed! These people are devils incarnate!

Damien's right, they give an award for anything these days:

Lionsgate, 'Sin,' Art Machine top Key Art noms
Campaigns for Dimensions' comic book 'Sin City' nabs nine nominations

Lionsgate Entertainment led the nominations Tuesday for The Hollywood Reporter's 35th annual Key Art Awards with 26 noms, while Dimension Films' "Sin City" scored more noms than any other movie and Art Machine led the field among agencies with 20 noms.

"Sin City" topped the movie pack with nine noms, followed by "Crash," "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Saw II," which tied for second with six noms each, and "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo," "Batman Begins" and "Chicken Little," which all placed third with five noms apiece.

Among the studios, Universal came in second with 20 nominations, and Disney and its Buena Vista distribution arm placed third with 19.

On the agency/vendor side, BLT & Associates Inc. and Trailer Park tied for second with 10 noms each, and Mark Woollen & Associates and the Ant Farm came in third with seven noms each.

The winners will be announced June 16 at the Key Art Awards, hosted by actor-comedian Kevin Nealon at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland.

More about the Key Art Awards

Awards will be handed out in 29 categories covering posters, trailers, Internet advertising, TV spots, outdoor advertising, theatrical standees, print ads, home entertainment and co-branded campaigns, among others.

"In its 35th year, The Hollywood Reporter Key Art Awards program will be bigger than ever before," THR publisher Tony Uphoff said.

"Movie marketing is an extraordinary challenge today," Uphoff said. "The driving force behind movie attendance and DVD sales, great movie marketing breaks through the clutter in an increasingly fragmented consumer market. It is also a hugely influential force in pop culture around the globe, with everything from trailers, theatrical posters and television commercials to ads on buses and billboards. We are very pleased to honor the movie advertising community and their outstanding creative contributions."

Lionsgate, which led the Key Art nominations for the first time, was recognized for its work on "Crash," "Saw II," "Lord of War," "The Devil's Rejects," "Happy Endings," "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" and "Saw." It made a particularly strong showing in the poster category, raking in eight of its 26 nominations.

"We're absolutely thrilled, and it's a true reflection on the tremendous creative partners we work with -- the printers, the trailer houses and the design agencies," said Tim Palen, co-president of marketing for Lionsgate, which won four Key Art Awards last year. "We really do have the best and smartest partners that anybody could have."

Art Machine, nominated in the poster category for "Crash," "Saw II," "Lord of War" and "European Gigolo" and in the consumer print ad category for "Saw II" and "Lord of War," credited Lionsgate and Columbia Pictures for "stretching the boundaries of traditional advertising" in their marketing campaigns. The "Saw II" poster designed by Art Machine featured two severed fingers, and the "Lord of War" poster depicted Nicolas Cage's face constructed out of bullets.

"Our clients took the time to make choices and move in directions that are not the classic movie advertising choices," said John McMahon, head of operations at Culver City-based Art Machine. "I think it's recognition of the choices they've made that has led to us being nominated so many times. It's a client's choice to include us in their marketing campaigns, and we're just extremely grateful that they allowed us to play a role."

Dimension Films' "Sin City" was recognized for its posters, movie trailers, Internet advertising and TV spots. At the time of the movie's release, Dimension was the genre film label of Miramax Films, a unit of the Walt Disney Co.; Dimension is now part of the Weinstein Co.

The Key Art Awards are a central event in the movie-advertising community, attracting more than 1,800 executives and creative professionals from the major studios and marketing agencies.

"The Key Art Awards honor the work of the unsung heroes of our industry: the creative advertising community," said Bob Israel, producer of the Key Art Awards show and co-CEO of the Aspect Group of Companies. "People who attend the Key Art show are blown away by just how spectacular it is to see the best of the best work in the course of one night."

The Key Art Awards committee received 1,423 submissions this year. More than 460 movie-advertising professionals judged and ranked the entries with the Nielsen Research Group administering the judging process. Nielsen, which is owned by VNU, the parent company of The Hollywood Reporter, tabulated the ballots and will determine the winners in each category.

Sponsors for this year's Key Art Awards include Avid, Corbis Chicago Tribune, Crew Creative, First Entertainment Credit Union, Los Angeles Times, MSN and Nielsen NRG.

A complete list of nominees follows. (Legend: film, entering company, studio)
