Brutal week for cinematographers from my youth.
If you haven't seen the documentary about him and Laszlo Kovacs, I highly recommend it. He had a truly risky journey to get out of Hungary, And that footage of the uprising he escaped with was the only major footage the West had to document what was going on over there.
I always thought Deliverance was maybe his greatest credit (it was just on Sundance tonight; love the water shots), but all the work he did over that decade or so was pretty spectacular. (The Fury may collapse dramatically, but it's gorgeous to look at.) I'm sorry he didn't enjoy working on Close Encounters, but I'm happy he got at least one Oscar.
