I always thought of Tork as kind of the Ringo of the Monkees -- the "other one". The others had more dominant associations for me: Dolenz had been a child actor I'd seen on TV's Circus Boy; Jones was a Broadway actor I'd seen play the Artful Dodger in Oliver!; and Nesmith had a more expansive career aside from the group, including writing Linda Ronstadt's Stone Poneys hit Different Drum, a favorite of mine.
But Tork was an accomplished musician on his own (they all were, it turned out -- though it took them years to get past the initial reports they were faking their playing). His passing is another sign my youth fades further into the distance each day.
