I don't mind cynicism or meanness - sometimes - but it is when a filmmaker tries to disguise it that it pisses me off.

For the record, these are all the acting performances that I longlisted from the below selection in their respective years. Not all of these I would nominate - some of them may be seriously flawed, (I have masterlist for every year and when I see a film, I tabulate its best aspects on an Oscar-style ballot template and rank it relative to the quality of other films from that year) but I see enough merit in them to put them all 'in contention' to varying degrees:

I find Wilder to be a horribly mean-spirited and misogynistic director. As a writer he gives out some crackling dialogue but it is always tinged with a nastiness that just isn't funny, and often there's a gap between how he writes and how he adapts, a gap he doesn't seem willing (or perceptive enough) to bridge. His films get by on the strength of their situations, dialogue and actors, but if all his films display a similar attitude I can't see myself giving him any higher a grade than I gave The Apartment. I probably wouldn't shortlist Sunset Blvd. for original screenplay either, but I didn't see many worthwhile contenders in that area this year.

I'm happy I got to see 16 A+s - bringing my all-time total to 53. Some great discoveries.
........and no Miss Swanson? Tsk, Tsk........
I wouldn't even longlist her, sorry.

I think most of us are equally obsessive. I write notes on every movie I see during the course of the year, and use a 4 star system. And you certainlt saw some great films this year.

Glad to see Kiss Me Deadly rated so high. Amazing film. It's in my all-time Top 20. (I'll be posting an all time best list in a week or so.)

I think Billy Wilder is way over-rated, and he does have a cruel streak but I think he's done some wonderful things, including Sunster Boulevard and The Apartment. But what you wrote about Wilder, though -- "a horribly mean-spirited and misogynistic director" -- is exactly how I feel about Mike Leigh, whom I despise. Even the morse so in that he cloaks himself in hard left rhetoric. I also can't stand the Coens for their mean-spiriteness and condescension (as a friend of mine asked rhetorically, "Why are you so condescending to your charactres? YOU created them?"), and the fact that theey're so facile makes their attitude all the more ridiculous.

I must say that's quite a year.

I used to use a **** rating system including 1/2 stars, then I went to whole stars only. Now I'm doing a simple A to F grading system with no minuses or pluses.

A - Excellent, don't miss it
B - Good, well worth your time
C - Fair, good in parts, average
D - Poor, extrememly disappointing
F - Rotten, beneath contempt, a complete waste of time

2011 Film Logs

Post by bizarre »

I don't know who else here is as obsessive with this stuff as I am, but I'll post this here as I've just wrapped it up - New Year's is tomorrow and I won't have time to see any more movies by the 1st.

I’ve reached a grand total of 158 films seen for the first time this year - 42 down from 2010’s total, but I was far busier this year.

I use a letter grade to rank:

A+ - a masterpiece
A - a near-masterpiece
A- - fantastic with some flaws
B+ - great with some flaws
B - very good, somewhat flawed
B- - good with noticeable flaws
C+ - some merit but very flawed
C - some merit but the bad outweighs the good
C- - poor, minor redeeming qualities
D - bad, very minor redeeming qualities
F - no or few redeeming qualities, awful

If you use a 1-10 scale you could convert like so:
A+ = 10
A = 9
A- = 8
B+ = 7
B = 6
B- = 5
C+ = 4
C = 3
C = 2
D & F = 1
