That scene in the 1979 The Champ is a good example. The scene that teared me up the most when I first saw it was the one in which Debra Winger sees her sons for the last time in Terms Of Endearment. I fell in love with Emma and was rooting for her big time to improve her and her kids' lives. Watching it all end was hard on me.
