I think I'll compile mine but in chronological order. Too complicated to decide if I liked Casablanca more than Chinatown or vice versa.

It's not easy to come up with a list of 250 films. It's easier to come up with a list of 1,000. The difficulty is in limiting the list to 250.

One way to do it is to include films by favorite directors. Another is to include films from pre-existing ten best lits. The ranking itself is subjective. A simple chronological list would be simpler.

The year with the most films represented on my list is 1955 with 11.

It is easy to come up with a top 250 list. But how do you rate each to get them in the order you all have them in?

what is the Criterion message board and are they asking for suggestions or just a list of favorite films?

I will try to come up with 250 movies, too, but it will be difficult. Many films are more along the lines of *** and ***1/2 rather than great, four star films. But it'll be worth a try.

I just jotted down a list of guilty pleasures for that Criterion message board. I think the best definition of a guilty pleasure is a film one loves a great deal but can't (or doesn't want to) come up with a coherent defense on its behalf. Here were mine:

The Wiz (great Q score, great sets/costume... my favorite Oscar-bait movie?)
Earthquake (really any disaster film from the '30s, '70s, or the '90s, for that matter, especially Titanic, which I've not thing one wrong with)
Mommie Dearest (meaning I reject the notion that it's a great bad movie, because I think it's pretty damn great actually)
Tales from the Crypt (and any other '70s British horror anthology... a particularly rewarding mini-genre)
Head (beatsick)
Quintet (I'm to understand it's pretty loathed even by most Altman fans)
Scary Movie & Don't Be a Menace...
Voodoo Academy (for a select audience, to be sure)
Maurice (along the same lines, but this one is here because usually I loathe Merchant-Ivory stuff... apparently, I'm to feel guilty for liking it when two attractive men kiss)
Serial Mom (too dark for mainstream, too light for Waters fans... somehow, just right for me)
Freddy Got Fingered & Jackass: The Movie (the "angry young men" movies of my generation, I think)
Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs (has never been the same since reading the poem "Snow White & the Seven Deadly Sins")

I'll try to come up with a Top 250, but it will take awhile.

I have done a quick count of the most mentioned directors on the four lists. The only real surpise for me was Vincente Minnelli being so high.

John Ford - 25 votes
Alfred Hitch#### - 23 votes
Vincente Minnelli - 20 votes
Blake Edwards & Stanley Kubrick - 18 votes
George Cukor - 17 votes
Billy Wilder - 16 votes
Howard Hawks - 15 votes
Frederico Fellini & Leo McCarey - 14 votes
Douglas Sirk - 13 votes
Orson Welles - 12 votes
Woody Allen, Luis Bunuel, Akira Kurosawa, Nicholas Ray, Jean Renior, Steven Spielberg & William Wyler - 10 votes
