To Sibley Watson and Alan Wilder, for making their bizarre and hilarious short-form satire of talking pictures, Tomato Is Another Day in this year.

Special Citations (3)

To Oscar Guy before being able to find something other than Psycho to give something to. :)

To Big Magilla for the year in which he began his dual "movie" career as an usher after school and as a chronicler of his own annual film awards known here as "Oscar Shouldabeens". :D

To Peter Kubelka, who with his experimental short Arnulf Rainer launched an entire subset of avant-garde films called 'flicker films', and laid the groundwork for structuralist filmmaking.

Special Citations (4)

To The American Film Institute, Sissy Spacek, and the no doubt very tolerant friend and family of David Lynch who supported him financially through the filming of Eraserhead which lasted between 1971 and 1976.

To Frameline, the longest-running LBGT-themed film festival, which was founded with a showing of experimental shorts in a San Francisco neighborhood theatre in this year, and has since grown into the largest event of its kind in the world.

To the TV movies and mini-series of 1977, an important year in the history of the genre, most significantly for the groundbreaking Roots, but also for Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years; The Gathering; rousing TV remakes of The Four Feathers and The Count of Monte Cristo and the broadcast of the Broadway revival of The Royal Family.

To the creators of "21" for adding yet another installment to the fascinating "Up Series".

To Ching Chu & Hsiao Hou, action choreographers for the spectacular Eight Diagram Pole Fighter.

To Harvery Fierstein for his moving narration in the documentary The Times of Harvey Milk.

To David Lean for the now gone entrepreneurial ingenuity that he brought to film-making as exemplified by the building of a city within a city in A Passage to India simply to cut down on street noise and avoid having to re-record dialogue in studio.

To the "Hellfire" sequence in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. One of the best animated, best engineered and best sequences in any animated film (or perhaps any live-action film for that matter) in the last two or more decades.

To Bobby Muller for his experimentation with cinematography in Breaking the Waves coming on the heels of his brilliant black and white compositions for Dead Man just a year earlier.

To the Pusan International Film Festival, founded in this year and since become the premier showcase for Asian filmmaking talent, both through its programming and through its commissioning of short films.
