Sorry for the hold-up... I was preparing all week for my first workshop (which went great, btw) and will have plenty of time this weekend to get caught up on this and Best by the Best.

Boyle, Van Sant, and Fincher are all really talented filmmakers. I'm not sure anyone would argue that Slumdog, Milk, and Benjamin Button are their quintessential films, but I think they all do very fine work elevating mainstream material into stuff that's special. Boyle gives Slumdog exciting momentum, and Van Sant creates a vivid sense of community (full of wonderful, lived-in performances) in Milk, but I'll give it to David Fincher, for creating a visually stunning work full of power and ambition.
Ron Howard's direction of Frost/Nixon is competent, nothing more.
Stephen Daldry's direction of The Reader is incompetent. I still can't believe this guy has so many Oscar nominations!!

Well, you didn't delineate who you were passing to or pick an category ('52 and '53 are both open for the category of Color Cinematography), either of which might've sped things up.

James Dunn is an extremely deserving winner here, and I am tempted to use my pass on him. I wasn't that impressed with Michael Chekhov (in a Hitchcock I don's much care for) and I haven't seem the other three. However, I can't begrudge the only opportunity to give Robert Mitchum an Oscar. He can take it.

Usually, If I spent a lot of time away from this place I read all the messages, specially to know everybody's opinion. Last week I was on my vacations. When I finally got home I checked the site and noticed I was next on this game and thought I was holding it for a while. That's why I answered without revising all the posts (I did checked, however, the last 4).
But then again, I agree with the hiatus thing... is reasonable. But then again, I think I'm going to spend a lot of more time away from this place and not gonna be able to post as regularly as these games requires. I'm returning to work next week, a lot of hard work is expecting me and in a few months I'm going to start my Critical Care specialty course (I'm graduating as a specialist in Internal Medicine in November). So... probably I'm ot going to be around as much as I'd like. Flipp, please, maybe for a while but for now I ask you to take me out of the game. Good luck to everyone, I'll try to come around as much as I can...

That's my fault. I was going to update the lists this weekend, but hadn't gotten around to it. I just adopted a kitten on Wednesday and have grad school and a full-time job, so this has taken a backseat. I've been trying to stay more on top of things, and was going to try and catch up today/tomorrow.

Not to hassle anyone, but I just did best director of 2003 five days before Harry. It's literally five comments before his post. And we ended up choosing the same directors. I know that the list isn't updated yet (I'll try to do that this weekend to help flipp out), but if we're not really reading the posts, I'm wondering if it's time to put this game on hiatus. Especially as it was designed (I think) as an inter-Oscar time waster, and we're getting down to the nitty gritty of the oscar season pretty soon.
