Rather mediocre and dated film. Gene Hackman clearly is lead. The soundtrack is horrendous.
You missed the boat. This film has some beautiful performances that manage to transcend the "datedness". Melvyn Douglas, Gene Hackman and Estelle Parsons are all superb.

Battle In Seattle (Stuart Townsend 2008) Although some of the characterizations are a little hoary, this is a movie Paul Greengrass would have made if he actually had vision and talent.

The Great White Hope (1970) - Martin Ritt

7/10

James Earl Jones is very very good in this. If Jane Alexander was nominated in supporting actress (where I think she belongs), she would have won hands down. Didn't particulary liked Martin Ritt's directing in this. I think it was very academical and old fashioned. Sometimes it felt that it was just a camera filming a stage play (in which the movies is based).

Quite awhile didn't update due to my hectic overseas trips in the past 1 1/2 month (and therefore saw less films). Here are what I have seen since May 19,

The Oily Maniac (1976; HK) - 3
Gomorra (2008; Italy) - 7
Il Papa di Giovanna (2008; Italy) - 6.5
Besieged City (2007; HK) - 7
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009; USA) - 4.5
The Horsemen (2009; USA) - 4
Detroit Metal City (2008; Japan) - 5
Wonder Women (1987; HK) - 5.5
Que parezca un accidente (2008; Spain) - 4
Un barrage contre le Pacifique (2008; France/Cambodia) - 6
Siete minutos (2008; Spain) - 4.5
Al Jazeera (Egypt?) - 4.5
Ne le dis à personne (2006; France) - 6
Finnischer Tango (2008; Germany) - 4
20th Century Boys: Chapter 2 (2009; Japan) - 4.5
Ocean Flame (2008; HK) - 6
Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009; USA) - 3.5
Food Inc. (2008; USA) - 6
Chandni Chowk to China (2009; India) - 3.5
Here (2009; Singapore) - 8.5 [This Cannes' Directors' Fortnight selection is now my all-time favorite Singapore film! It is a film that attempts to re-define the essence of cinematic art and its relationship with human psyche, apart from its multi-layered symbolism.]
Terminator Salvation (2009; USA) - 3
Up (2009; USA) - 7

Ponyo - English-dubbed version (8/10)

If you are a Miyazaki fan like I am, you're just thrilled to get another glimpse of his artistry and imagination. Damienites and other Spirited Away detractors stay away, as it's more of the same. Wish I could conveniently compare with the Japanese-language version (like I did with Howl's Moving Castle, where i theatre-hopped at a multiplex playing both prints) but I will say that the celebrity voice casting (including Tina Fey in almost entirely non-comedic role) was not as distracting as I feared it would be. Liam Neeson and Cate Blanchett were the only ones to pull me out of the movie.

My Architect (Kahn) - 8/10

Protag a bit too involved for my tastes but about as powerful as it could possibly be. Life of artist fully comes into view.
