Netflix shows that Lino Brocka has some films available for rental. I don't have any idea what the audio/video quality is though. Unless it's a Criterion release, you never know what kind of a/v quality you're going to get with international films on DVD. They can look and sound great (Violent Summer), or they can be unwatchable (The Gospel According to St. Matthew).

Another highly recommended classic Filipino film.

Great film. It's a shame that Brocka isn't a (art) household name. He was one of the truly great -- and original -- filmmakers. (If he had lived into the Internet age, then his virtues would probably have been propegated throughout the world, much as Hou and Wong-Kar Wei have been.

The Woman He Loved (1988) Charles Jarrott 6/10

Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews do credible imitations of the pair but Olivia de Havilland, Julie Harris and others are wasted in support.

Never understood why Julie Harris got an Emmy nod for this. I don't recall her but Phyllis Calvert played Queen Mary and usually she was always good, even in small roles.

I've never understood most of Julie Harris' nominations.

As for Phyllis Calvert, she's only in two scenes and nowhere near as impressive as Eileen Herlie in 1972's The Woman I Love with Richard Chamberlain and Faye Dunaway or Peggy Ashcroft in 1978's Edward & Mrs. Simpson with Edward Fox and Cynthia Harris.

Another impressive Queen Mary I recall is Greer Garson in Crown Matrimonial, a 1974 Hallmark Hall of Fame production covering the same material. She was a central figure in all these productions except the 1988 version.

If you're into knowing how the jews lived in 1898 in NY, probably you should check this. Otherwise, avoid this terribly directed, poorly acted and boring film (and the running time is only 88 min).

Victoria & Albert (2001) John Erman 7/10

British mini-series with a slightly different perspective than the current theatrical release, The Young Victoria. Victoria Hamilton, who plays the young queen here and Emily Blunt who plays her in the film, bear an uncanny resemblance to one another.

Fascinating post-war look back at World War II British espionage, the forerunner of everything from The Guns of Navarone and Operation Crossbow to Army of Shadows. Robert Beatty, Simone Signoret, Jack Warner, Gordon Jackson and James Robertson Justice are among the stars.

1) Hilde (2009) By Kai Wessel A biography of Hildegard Knef, one of Germany's biggest post-war stars 8/10

2) A Year in Winter (2008) by Caroline Link. An intense film with great performances. 8/10

The Pumpkin Eater (1964) Jack Clayton 6/10

I watched this for the first time in years in preparation for the vote in the 1964 Best Actress poll.

Harold Pinter's minimalist screenplay and Clayton's lethargic direction make it difficult to follow unless you completely concentrate but the acting is impeccable, especially Anne Bancroft whose portrayal of a thrice married mother of seven undergoing a nervous breakdown is a lot better than I remembered it.
