The Asian Film Archive Young Jury Awards

This is not quite some "film awards in Chinese Cinema" but film awards for Singapore films. A set of so-called "iconic" films made between 1970s-2007 (most of them are post-1990 films) were selected to participate in the competition. The young jury members were 6 high school or tertiary students. They submitted their film papers as part of the requirements for applying for participating in the program. I was one of their mentors who offered insights (I hope so) of film awards all over the world to assist them in figuring out criteria for film selections during the 12-hour jury meetings. It was quite a fun and fruitful experience for me. Here are the winners,

Best Feature Film: Eating Air by Kelvin Tong & Jasmine Ng
Jury Prize for Feature Film: 12 Storeys by Eric Khoo
Best Short Film: Ah Ma by Anthony Chen
Jury Prize for Short Film: Zo Gang by Jacen Tan
Best Direction for a Feature Film: 12 Storeys by Eric Khoo & Eating Air by Kelvin Tong & Jasmine Ng (Tie)
Best Direction for a Short Film: Monkeylove by Royston Tan
Special Mention for Direction of a Short Film: Fonzi by Kirsten Tan
Best Cinematography for a Feature Film: Perth by Djinn
Best Cinematography for a Short Film: Fonzi by Kirsten Tan
Most Memorable Sequence: Eating Air by Kelvin Tong & Jasmine Ng
Best Screenplay for a Feature Film: Singapore Dreaming by Woo Yen Yen & Colin Goh
Best Screenplay for a Short Film: Santa is Here by Christina Oer
Best Local Representation: 12 Storeys by Eric Khoo
Special Mention for Local Representation: Singapore Gaga by Tan Pin Pin
Best Performance: Jack Neo in 12 Storeys & Koh Boon-Pin in 12 Storeys (Tie)
Best Sound Design for a Feature Film: Eating Air by Kelvin Tong & Jasmine Ng
Best Sound Design for a Short Film: Ah Ma by Anthony Chen
Best Editing: Where The Sun Rises by Grace Phan
Special Mention for Editing: Homeless FC by James Leong & Lynn Lee

Ning Ying's body of work is mildly interesting. My favorite is PERPETUAL MOTION, tauted as China's "Sex in the City" but in a more intellectual than fashion-crazy manner. Her first two films, FOR FUN and ON THE BEAT, are more of neo-realism style. I haven't seen I LOVE BEIJING and RAILROAD OF HOPE yet.

Inky, thanks for this- always glad to see your informative posts.

Ning Ying is going to be coming to Berkeley next month for a residency, in which all of her films will screen. I doubt I'll be able to make more than a few of them due to a busy month. Are you a fan of hers? Is there a particular film or two I should make my top priority? Or is she so good that I ought to forget about all the other stuff going on and just make sure I see all of them?

Golden Roaster - Lifetime Achievement Awards: Yuan Naichen, Chen Qiang

In China, Golden Roasters are equivalent to Oscars while Hundred Flower Awards are equivalent to People's Choice Awards. The prizes have been awarded in alternate years since a couple of years ago and therefore the qualifying periods for both awards span two years respectively.

THE KNOT has won both Golden Roaster & Huabiao Award Best Pictures in the last year (Huabiao Awards - a more "(government) establishment-oriented" film award). Too bad it couldn't strike a hattrick. ASSEMBLY was released in Dec 2007 and therefore it had missed the qualifying period of the last editions of Golden Roasters & Huabiao Awards.

However, I'd be even more interested in your thoughts on any of these titles, which are set to play a local venue over the next couple months. I've only seen a film each by two of the filmmakers (Wu Tianming and Xie Fei):

Lost Indulgence (Zhang Yibai, 2008)
In Love We Trust (Wang Xiaoshuai, 2007)
River Without Buoys (Wu Tianming, 1983)
My Memories of Old Beijing (Wu Yigong, 1982)
Black Snow (Xie Fei, 1989)
Woman Demon Human (Huang Shuqin, 1987)

Glad to see you back on the board! I was worried you'd fled for good!
Films that I've seen ...

LINGER
Johnnie To took a break from his pet genre. Quite an interesting though uneven "twist" of such ghost romance films. So regretful that I've missed his recent offer SPARROWS (as I was away in the Netherlands when the film was released in sg and only lasted 2 weeks!), another typical (and typically astonishing) To film after ELECTION 1 & 2.

SECRET
Fans or non-fans of Jay Chou were crazy about this film - very neat direction for a first-time director. To me, I agree that it's neat and yet ... so "idol drama"-like, if you know what it means.

FLOWER IN THE POCKET
One of my favorite Singapore Int'l Film Fest 08 selections. A simple character-driven children's film told in such an engaging manner. I'm a personal friend of the Malaysian New Wave director James Lee (who produced this film) and I found his wooden-face performance in this fillm (as the father of the two kids) is so cool and fits the movie so well, i.e., that enhances the contrast between the two generations. The tomboy-ish Malay little girl and her mother (Mislina Mustapha) are yet two other pleasant surprises. Mislina's brief, comical appearance in the lunch scene has stolen the show. You won't believe it if you have the chance to catch James Lee's own new offer, also his most mature film to date, BREATHING IN MUD, where Mislina plays a dark, poignant character that resembles nothing of her role in FLOWER IN THE POCKET.

IN LOVE WE TRUST
I like Wang Xiaoshuai as a brilliant young auteur but I don't think his realism-style body-of-work highly. This film didn't change my view on his movies.

MY OLD MEMORIES OF BEIJING
The best part of this film is the recreated atmosphere of the "Old Beijing". Overall, it's a neat production. Enough say.

BLACK SNOW
I watched this film 17 years ago and couldn't recall much ... that means I wasn't impressed. I know director Xie Fei in person and being a veteran film professor who mentored almost all of the 5th-Gen directors, I know his taste in cinematic arts ... but his taste has not been reflected by the films that his body of work. He survived the SARS epidemic 4 years back but his age and health may not allow him to make new films anymore.

WOMEN DEMON HUMAN
A less known film that could have become a landmarked feminist-themed movie. It's worth a sociological analysis of Chinese women's status in the past and present (late 1980's) as depicted by the film.

BTW, traditionally, there is no presentation ceremony for Golden Plum Awards.

As a Chinese, I don't think this film highly. It's worth watching for its production value, and its sincerity with respect to its production value (i.e., often, a film with high production value lacks sincerity and instead well too commercially calculative).

Inky,

The Warlords is available on dvd here in Pakistan. Have you seen the film and is it worth watching? Although after winning 8 awards it should be good I suppose!
