28th Hong Kong Film Awards

Best Film: IP MAN (The 1st time that the Best Film winner has only won one more award.)
Best Director: Ann Hui, THE WAY WE ARE (This is Ann's 3rd Best Director HKFA.)
Best Screenplay: Lou Shiu Wa, THE WAY WE ARE
Best Actor: Nick Cheung, THE BEAST STALKER
Best Actress: Paw Hee Ching, THE WAY WE ARE (The HK veteran actress has finally broken mainland Chinese actresses' 4-year domination in this category.)
Best Supporting Actor: Liu Kai Chi, THE BEAST STALKER (This is Kai Chi's 2nd Best Supp Actor HKFA.)
Best Supporting Actress: Chan Lai Wun, THE WAY WE ARE
Best New Performer: Xu Jiao, CJ7
Best Cinematography: Arthur Wong, PAINTED SKIN (Arthur has scored a hattrick of Best Cinematography HKFA. This is also his 8th HKFA.)
Best Film Editing: Yau Chi Wai, CONNECTED (This is the HK remake of the Hollywood film CELLULAR.)
Best Art Direction: Tim Yip, RED CLIFF (Tim is an Academy Award winner but this is his 1st HKFA after 8 nominations in past years.)
Best Costume Make Up Design: Tim Yip, RED CLIFF
Best Action Choreography: Sammo Hung & Leung Siu Hung, IP MAN (This is Sammo's 2nd Best Action Choreography HKFA. He has also won Best Actor HKFA before.)
Best Sound Design: Wu Jiang & Roger Savage, RED CLIFF
Best Visual Effects: Craig Hayes, RED CLIFF
Best Original Film Score: Iwashiro Taro, RED CLIFF
Best Original Film Song: Fujiwara Ikuro, Keith Chan, Jane Zhang, PAINTED SKIN
Best New Director: Derek Kwok, THE MOSS
Best Asian Film: ASSEMBLY (Mainland China)
Professional Spirit Award: Ding Yue (dubbing artiste/actor)
Lifetime Achievement Award: Josephine Siao (actress/director)

Another interesting pattern (the 1st in HKFA, and I can't recall if the same pattern occurred in Academy Awards before):

- The Best Actor & Supporting Actor winners came from the same (masculine) film THE BEAST STALKER (by a male director)
- Best Best Actress & Supporting Actress winners came from the same (feminine) film THE WAY WE ARE (by a female director)

I can't wait to see The Chaser. I recently placed an order for the DVD.

It wasn't my top pick among the nominees either (but the nomination list as decided by the organizer wasn't terrific in the first place - none of them made it to my Top-5 Asian films released in Singapore last year). I think the film critics here found it aesthetically cool and emotionally engaging. If there were a Singapore version of Rotten Tomatoes website, this film could easily hit "90% (of the critics liked it)".

The Inaugural Singapore Entertainment Awards

These are not exactly "film awards in Chinese Cinema" but is still kind of relevant. I served as one of the international judges of the film section. The winners of the film section are:

Best Singapore Film of the Year: RULE #1
Best Singapore Director of the Year: Kelvin Tong, RULE #1
Best Asian Film of the Year: THE CHASER (S. Korea)
Most Popular Singapore Performer of the Year: Fann Wong

Ironically, RULE #1, directed by a Singaporean, is more a Hong Kong film than a Singapore film - it is set in HK (as this horror film about cops investigating ghosts might cause censorship problem in Singapore if it is set in Singapore), predominantly involving HK cast and crew members, and has strong HK influence in its style.

Have you seen HIGH NOON, Inky? It's coming to a San Francisco film festival soon.
SPARROW - Me too. However, it has received mediocre reviews from critics in this part of the world. One of the Chinese Singaporean critics considered it "Johnnie To's worst". Many critics fail to appreciate the diversity of cinematic aethestics and instead have been using the same set of criteria (largely influenced by mainstream Hollywood) to critique all types of films. SPARROW's aesthetics remind me of European crime movies made during 1940s-60s and even Godard, and yet the sentiment is 100% Hong Kong.

Haven't seen HIGH NOON yet. For the time being, I am more keen on Ann Hui's latest - THE WAY WE ARE.
