rainBard, my apology if this reply comes in late ...

Yes, I've seen AFTER THIS OUR EXILE. Just look at how it faired at Golden Horse Awards (Best Pic) & HK Film Awards (see below) and you can decide yourself ...

I haven't seen AMOUR-LEGENDE and HOW IS YOUR FISH TODAY? THE OTHER HALF is my second favorite film at this year's Singapore Int'l Film Fest (opening coming Wednesday but I've been watching screeners in the capacity of film critic), after Apitchatpong's SYNDROMES AND THE CENTURY. T.O.H. is one of the most intricately scripted Chinese films I've ever seen.

Taiwan-based Golden Horse Awards, the most historical film awards in Chinese Cinema among those which still exist today, is planning for a new round of revamp after they did so 11 years back.

Prior to 1996, the awards were restricted to Taiwan- and HK-made films for obvious political reasons. The nationalities of the nominees were also controlled (i.e., must be ROC [Taiwan] or HK citizens!) prior to 1991 (therefore, American-born Hayley Man in the HK-made film FAREWELL CHINA was first announced as a Best Supp Actress nominee and then disqualified - the restriction was lifted in the next year because of her).

From 1996 onwards, the awards have been opened up to any predominantly Chinese-speaking film under the sun. Therefore, mainland Chinese and Singapore films, and even American indie SAVING FACE (about 50% of Chinese dialogues) have been qualified (and SAVING FACE's female lead, American-born Michelle Krusiec was nominated for Best Actress, although I thought her co-star Joan Chen deserved it more).

Now they are thinking of extend the awards qualification rule to cover any film directed by ethnic Chinese to be qualified (and no restriction in the individual nominees' nationalities). That is, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN could be qualified if it were released this year (hmmmm ... Does that mean Ledger, Gyllenhaal, Williams and even Hathaway could be nominated for Golden Horse?). For this year's case, Hou Hsiao-Hsien's first French film THE RED BALLOON and Pang Brothers' THE MESSENGERS may be qualified.

Yes, the rule is outdated. STILL LIFE was showcased at Venice Film Fest in HD format and it went on to win Golden Lion. The win was suspicious as the Jury chair is a shareholder of the film, but at least no rule has stopped the film from the competition.

Anyway, rumor says that the disqualification has something to do with an ugly word fight (on arthouse vs. commercial films) between Jia Zhangke and Zhang Weiping, the producer of CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER, in the final quarter of last year. CURSE's unexpected 14-nod achievement show that he might have some influence in the HKFA, and therefore ... I don't totally believe with the rumor or speculation because Zhang is afterall not a Hong Konger and he has always been based in Beijing. He isn't like Sir Run Run Shaw who often intervened in the results of Asia-Pacific Film Festival and made his films or actors win awards back in 1960s.

HK Film Award nominations ... update

Jia Zhangke's STILL LIFE has been disqualified from the Best Asian Film competition for technical reason - the award regulations require nominated films to be showcased on 35mm print but the film used HD.

The nomination slot has been replaced by Singapore film I NOT STUPID TOO.

26th Hong Kong Film Awards - nominees

*** CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER leads the nomination list with 14 nods????!!!!
*** Johnnie To set another record - 2 films nominated for Best Pic & Best Dir in the same year
*** Youngest acting nod in the history of cinema???? - Best New Performer nominee, ROB-B-HOOD's Matthew Medvedev (A Chinese-Colombian) was 8 months old when the film was shot! He is 2 years old now ... and probably couldn't even recall his involvement in the film.
**** Former Golden Horse & HKFA Best Actress winner Sylvia Chang's two "disciples" Rene Liu and Angelica Lee are nominated for Best Actress. This is not the first time both younger actresses receive HKFA nods ... but the first time that they achieve this in the same year. Several years ago, Sylvia Chang produced a feminist omnibus film called "20:30:40" (referring to the characters' ages) where the three actresses playing the lead roles in the three segments.
**** Who would have imagined that singer/composer-turned-actor Jay Chow become the most nominated individual? He received a Best Supp Actor (for CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER) and two Best Song (for CURSE ... and FEARLESS) nods. Ironically, he is also nominated for Worst Actor Golden Plum (for CURSE ... again!).
